Drs. Michelle Afkhami and Christopher Searcy are interested in hiring a postdoctoral associate in Ecological Niche Modeling in the Department of Biology at University of Miami (Miami, FL).
The postdoctoral associate will work on a project funded by an NSF Dimensions of Biodiversity grant. The postdoc's task will be to construct ~10,000 niche models for species across the angiosperm phylogeny. This data will then be paired with data collected by collaborators on the same species to investigate whether association with fungal seed endophytes (known to play roles in nutrient acquisition, herbivore deterrence, and drought resistance) has expanded the environmental niche of flowering plants. Co-authorship on a major publication resulting from this work is expected.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolutionary Biology, or a related discipline, and experience building ecological niche models using high-throughput pipelines is preferred. Particular preference will be given to candidates who have experience with Maxent and the 'dismo' package in R. Other important qualifications are a strong work ethic, problem-solving and time management skills, a track record of publications, and independent research experience.
This is a three-month appointment with a start date of May 15, 2021. Candidates will have the option of pursuing this research remotely, but will be expected to meet with project PIs on a weekly basis throughout the project period.
