About This Position



The Clinical Translational Research Site at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, has an exciting career opportunity for a Supervisor, Research Laboratory. This position represents and supports the mission, philosophy and goals of the Cancer Center and the University of Miami community. The Supervisor, Research Laboratory allocates research staff and resources for the provision of quality study related outcomes.


The Supervisor, Research Laboratory will function as the primary liaison between different University of Miami laboratory sites and will communicate and coordinate the research laboratory activities with study coordinators/team. This position will report on-going project status, potential issues, and timelines to the Laboratory Manager, Medical Director and Administrative Director. The Supervisor, Research Laboratory will be responsible for coordinating all research laboratory activities: such as specimens integrity, shipping samples to Sponsors according to the lab manual, equipment maintenance, staff training and certifications and all other applicable rules, policies and regulations.


The duties and responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:




  • The Research Laboratory Supervisor will be responsible for establishing and managing a strong, effective working relationship with multiple research laboratory sites in order to facilitate the pharmacokinetic and tissue sample processing, including data acquisition related to UM clinical and pathology laboratory for all University of Miami research protocols.




  • This position will work with the assigned participating research site staff to manage resources, establish work plans and processes, schedule activities, monitor budget, and identify priorities to ensure the site meets or exceeds budgeted tissue acquisitions, benchmarks, timelines and keys deliverables and maintains compliance with data requirements, IRB and Regulatory Affairs. The Overseer will manage the interface of all cross-functional departments to perform research project related activities according to research project timelines and milestones in a manner consistent with the clinical trial process. Good Clinical Practice, Good Laboratory Practice, FDA, HHS OHRP, and ethical, transparent business practices.




  • The Research Supervisor will provide direct supervision for University of Miami laboratory Research Area and Phase 1 Laboratory.




  • Responsible for coordinating all University of Miami Pathology lab research protocols.




  • Work with University of Miami Principal Investigators and their coordinators as to the status of research: Gives approval thru the PPRC. Responsible for coordinating release of specimens/data related to University of Miami Pathology/Clinical lab. Coordinate, process and verifies all research study requirements and activities for the histology and clinical laboratory research specimens. Involved in all daily operations, meetings and research activities. Responsible for all research specimen accessioning and billing verification. Attends Site Initiation Visits by Sponsors to introduce new protocols.




  • Accessions lab specimens into LIS, labels/handles specimens/per protocol. If applicable.




  • Answers phone/ client services, and does clerical functions as needed. Handles communication, including telephone information requests, with promptness, courtesy, and respect to confidentiality.




  • Assists clinicians, attendings, and residents in finding reports/data related to University of Miami Pathology/Clinical lab.




  • Maintains inventory and Supplies




  • Maintains adequate inventory levels as per protocol. Rotates previous stock when it applies. Places orders regularly as needed, picks up, unpacks, dates and stores in a timely manner according to manufacturers' recommendation. Checks packing slips, verifies amount of items received, documents and give copy to director/designee if applicable.




  • Keeps lab clean, neat and organized. Removes, empty boxes and recyclable material and disposes of them as per Standard Operating Procedures. Prepares biohazard containers for use and then disposal.




  • Adheres to all UM Administration, Environmental of Care, CHP, Safety, Infection Control and Laboratory policies and procedures.







Minimum Qualification



Bachelor's Degree in a basic science or health discipline with at least three years of relevant experience. Knowledge of business and management principles. Ability to direct, manage, implement, and evaluate department operations. Ability to establish department goals, and objectives that support the strategic plan. Ability to effectively plan, delegate and/or supervise the work of others. Ability to lead, motivate, develop, and train others. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.
