Primary Role



Reporting to the Customer Communications Manager, the External Affairs Specialist provides strategic design and branding expertise to American Water and its state subsidiaries.  





Key Accountabilities




  • Helps to support the strategic communications needs of American Water and the executive leadership team. Provides communications counsel and ensures the effective implementation of external affairs and related communications activities.

  • Assists in the proactive development of communications materials/tactics that produce cost, time and resource efficiencies and consistent messaging.

  • Monitor and measure communications and community outreach plans for outcomes and drive for continuous improvement in external and internal engagement.

  • Employs an awareness and knowledge of community resources and contacts, primarily in Camden, NJ; understands the attitudes and concerns of the community and establishes and maintains cooperative and effective relationships, primarily in Camden, NJ.

  • Assists in implementing communications strategies, tactics and activities to ensure ongoing, consistent and targeted communications that supports American Water philanthropic efforts.

  • Assists in creating and implementing proactive, coordinated and aligned media relations, public relations and community relations plans. Assists in developing effective community outreach and public relations materials. Adheres to all budget management requirements.

  • Partner with External and Internal Communications colleagues to ensure strategic integration of messaging and regularly communicate and discuss best practices with client groups.

  • Working with the External Affairs Manager, helps to identify and develop opportunities to raise and enhance the company's reputation as a good corporate citizen through strong networking skills, employing effective communications strategies and leveraging key community initiatives that align with company goals.

  • Assists in developing and implementing communications activities in support of all American Water business operations across the country. Provides communications and support to American Water businesses as needed.




Knowledge/Skills




  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.

  • Has excellent and efficient working knowledge of PowerPoint, Word, and Excel. Knowledge of design software (InDesign, Photoshop, etc.) a plus.

  • Knowledgeable of Camden, NJ and other local community organizations, the political background and agendas of these groups, and other grassroots initiatives. Understands local and state political issues and is knowledgeable about the key players.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks and produce quality materials while achieving results and meeting deadlines.




Experience/Education




  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, public relations or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

  • Three to five years of experience in public relations, media relations, marketing or community relations in a fast-paced corporate, non-profit and/or agency environment. Outstanding written and oral communication skills.

  • Direct, hands-on experience in multimedia communication such as design (InDesign, Photoshop, etc.), video production, graphics and photography.
