Overview

Manages the functionality and efficiency of a group of computers running on one or more operating systems. The IT Systems Engineer is responsible for all IT Systems. This role manages both Physical and Virtual systems. This role is responsible for defining, maintaining, testing, and executing business continuity and disaster response plans for servers and data supporting business or regulatory requirements. Defining may include implementation of new systems, upgrading of existing systems to newer versions, and potentially replacing existing systems with new or different technologies. One of the key success factors for this position is in planning. Planning plays a critical role in change management approvals to ensure that changes to existing systems follow Systems policies and procedures and that the business users are minimally impacted.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Build and maintain a variety of servers utilizing standard server operating systems (Microsoft and Linux).
  1. Configure and maintain server virtualization platforms for optimal efficiency and security.

  2. Ensures servers are properly configured to meet documented security requirements.

  3. Monitors performance of servers for optimal efficiency.

  4. Tests and implements patching for all environments.

  5. Configures backups utilizing supplied tools to ensure server environments are highly available.

  6. Participates in the development, implementation, and testing of a server disaster recovery plan.

  7. Configures and manages the availability of remote server management tools.

  8. Contributes expertise to discussion and planning of new server environments both verbally and in writing as required for the improvement of the business.

  9. Tests new products and methods for managing server and virtualization environments.

  10. Strong understanding of standard cybersecurity protocols and processes.

  11. Good understanding of networking concepts as they relate to server connectivity and management.

  12. Demonstrate the ability to learn new skills as it relates to the job.

OTHER FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES:


  1. Complies with all safety rules and cooperates in the fullest in the promotion of safety and safe work habits, to include the reporting of any unsafe conditions or acts. Maintains all EH&S training on a current basis.

  2. Complies with all applicable MIC and Hawaii Gas policies and procedures.

  3. Maintains assigned work area and equipment in a clean, orderly and safe manner; performs housekeeping duties as required and/or instructed. Works in a safe and responsible manner.

  4. Performs all other related duties as instructed by supervisor/manager.

  5. May be required to participate in project planning and other high level tasks not directly related to the job description.

Qualifications

Required Education and/or Work Experience:


  • 4 year college degree in Computer Science or Information Systems Management and 3-4 years of directly related experience in server and virtualization management.

  • 2 year college degree in computer science or information systems management and 5-7 years of directly related experience in server and virtualization management.

  • 7-10 years of directly related experience in server and virtualization management.

Preferred Education and/or Work Experience:

4 year college degree and 7-10 years of directly related experience.

Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

None

Preferred Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation:

ITIL V3 certification, Virtualization management certifications (VMWare or Nutanix), Microsoft MCSA for Windows Server 2012 or newer.
