A Day in the Life:
The Senior Veterinary Pathologist plans, delivers and interprets pathology data from exploratory or regulatory preclinical studies and works with any of Medtronic's Operational Units. This role will conduct analyses of implantable biomaterials/devices by applying gross and histological pathology expertise focused on the host-device interactions and their biocompatibility or treatment outcome. Finally, the pathologist delivers scientific reports and offers comprehensive pathology knowledge.
The position reports to the Sr Medical Group Manager at Medtronic Physiological Research Laboratories (PRL).
Collaborates with Study Sponsors across all Operational Units was well as PRL Departments in the design, refinement, and execution of preclinical research efforts.
Responsible for the pathology sections of preclinical studies, from researching the most appropriate model or methods, to budgeting, protocol writing, analysis, reporting and to possible regulatory rebuttal.
Exercises independent judgment in establishing evaluation criteria and methods for the acquisition and optimization of pathologic data in alignment with best-practices and with outlines in national or international regulatory agencies.
Timely completion of pathology reports after consultation with other involved scientists.

Conducts or oversees animal necropsies on site and provides documentation.
Conducts or oversees tissue dissections or fixed-tissue trim and provides documentation.
Generates summary pathology reports that are aimed to convey the intricate spatial relationships including the biological interactions between host and implant; results will showcase the pathology implications for the safety and/or efficacy of devices.
Directs appropriate specimen processing for histology (laboratory on site) or other diagnostic methods.

Adheres to SOPs or Regulatory Guidelines, stays current with internal training, supports PRL's quality systems through implementation of pathology-related SOPs and Work Instructions
Assists in and influences the execution of research efforts also for bench models or preclinical R&D outside of PRL.
Performs pathology analyses of human autopsy or surgery specimens, or human cadaver tissue

Required:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, DVM from an accredited University.
Completed or able to complete within one year ACVP Boards

Nice to Have:
At least 3 years of anatomical veterinary pathology in an Institution with a diverse case load across several animal species and a variety of diagnostic needs.

  • Proficient in the whole pathology process.

  • Advanced and highly effective in written English.

  • High degree of self-motivation, independence, and time management skills.

  • Eagerly sharing knowledge and humble display of diagnostic vulnerability.

  • Professional verbal communication skills.

  • Computer skills: working knowledge of contemporary programs and apps.

  • Knowledge about animal welfare in research.

  • Knowledge in toxicologic or investigative pathology from a CRO, biotech or pharmaceutical industry.

  • Scientific and technical expertise in digital pathology, immunohistochemistry,

  • Scientific writing skills as evidenced by publications.

  • GLP or ISO experience.

  • High level of visual skills aimed at comprehensive data compilation and presentation (photography).

  • Interest in clinical pathology
    Base knowledge in statistics and/or use of statistical Program Packages

  • The Ability to work with variety of animal species: dogs, rabbits, ruminants, pigs, rodents.

  • Ability to perform work requiring visual acuity, manual dexterity, and hand-eye coordination.

  • Able to stand/bend over surgery table for moderate to long periods: 6 hours.

  • Able to work with fresh and chemically preserved tissues.

  • Able to tolerate exposure to bodily fluids.

  • Able to wear safety goggles, gloves, hats, and gowns.

  • Able to lift 50 pounds.

  • Must be able to travel independently to local Medtronic buildings/sites.
