Job Description:
Facebook is seeking a Data Center Design Engineering Director experienced in leading an in-house team of engineers, architects and leaders. The successful candidate will provide guidance and empower the organization to deliver Critical Facilities to support the needs of the company's expansion plans. Our data centers are the foundation upon which our software operates enabling innovation for the company. Building and operating data centers the "right" way from the day they go live is synonymous with ensuring capacity availability and capital conservatism. The data center design engineering team approaches facility design from the chips on the server boards to the facility mechanical and electrical distribution systems which ensure and maximize efficiency of our compute infrastructure. This position is full-time.

  • Lead an organization in the design and development of data center critical infrastructure systems
  • Lead an engineering team in driving the overall design phase and support of the implementation of the Design for Safe Manufacturing and Assembly program, inclusive of building a qualified execution team composed of full-time employees, external trade partners, general contractors, equipment vendors and consultants
  • Conduct weekly meetings with direct reports to provide feedback and assist in addressing concerns and removing roadblocks
  • Help develop and guide career path plans for direct reports including engineers, architects and managers
  • Work with other engineering leaders in cross functional efforts across the FB Infrastructure Data Center Organization
  • Develop and lead updates to the design standards and specifications for consistency and maximum system reliability
  • Provide mission critical system review services to local data center facility operations teams
  • Support design team the data center commissioning (Integrated System Test) for new and retrofitted data centers
  • Research new designs, materials, and construction methods for data center equipment and related components, including site and building
  • Provide and review detailed workflows for change management activities
  • Develop capital project budgets and complex business case analyses
  • Provide and analyze energy efficient solutions to minimize losses
  • Travel to data center sites for building relationships with pre-construction, construction and QA/QC partners, as required (15% - 25% travel)
  • Respond on an as-needed basis to data center related emergencies
  • Engage with corporate user groups and stakeholders
  • Engage with the other internal management teams

  • BS in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical) or BS Arch or BArch Professional registration
  • Minimum of twenty (20) years professional experience in areas such as data center design, construction, operations, and maintenance
  • If Mechanical or Electrical background: Knowledge of high/medium voltage (115kV/230kV/345kV) substation designs and distribution systems (12kV/34kV), mission critical power distribution, UPS, & PDU, direct evaporative cooling, chilled water, Dx, HVAC systems, and DDC & PLC based building management/automation systems
  • If Arch background: Knowledge of building envelope construction, mission critical building types including integral mechanical, electrical, and networking systems, master-planning large campuses, and workplace and interiors
  • If Arch/Civil background: Knowledge of CSLA disciplines including civil - underground utilities, understanding grading challenges and solutions, water retention, structural - managing steel packages for mill orders, coordinating gravity and lateral systems, coordinating with geotechnical engineer for foundation design, landscape - site features, paving & parking, pedestrian accesses
  • Project Management: Experience coordinating multiple consultant and contractor teams
  • Should possess knowledge of industry standards, building codes and safety standards including International Building Code
  • Cross-discipline knowledge of complete critical facility systems and design & construction cross-discipline knowledge of pre-construction services
  • Troubleshooting and analytical skills and experience providing solutions to complex projects under pressure
  • Experience building trusted relationships with immediate team, external stakeholders and vendors to influence decisions for the benefit of the business
  • Communications skills
  • Experience with AutoCAD, Revit/BIM, and PowerPoint software

  • Experience in an owner's representative position and collaborating with facilities operations
