Under the immediate supervision of the Crime Laboratory Toxicology Director, manage activities of the toxicology section & supervise Criminalists performing toxicological examinations of biological fluids (i.e., develop methods & policies to identify drugs of abuse; assist supervisors in development of standards & policies to comply with accreditation goals & standards, ensure strict adherence to safety standards & agency policies, & conducts forensic testing); Establish priorities & supervise subordinate personnel (e.g., provide developmental opportunities & work direction, coach staff to foster development, monitor staff activities to ensure quality customer service & information technology security, evaluate performance, approve section staffing levels, recommend discipline, pre-screen applications & participate in interviews); Operates state vehicle to transport equipment (lab reports, evidence) & travel to & from court appearances; Serves as resource person & technical advisor (e.g., liaison with vendors & contacts with other agencies, responds to requests for information; represents agency in meetings, testifies in court, assists staff in training, evaluation, techniques for toxicology examinations; provides technical review of casework).
Conduct research relative to instrument & laboratory best practices; Prepares reports for internal publication; Assist with office-related tasks as they pertain to the functionality & operation of the section (performs tests, validations, & maintenance on instruments (e.g., Vacuum Manifold, Hamilton Pipettes, V-Twin Analyzer, LC/MS/MS, GC Headspace, Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer), orders & maintains supplies, participates in short & long range manpower planning of the section); Performs other duties as assigned.
VALID DRIVER LICENSE REQUIRED TO OPERATE STATE-OWNED VEHICLE.
Completion of graduate core program in chemistry; 18 mos. work exp. in analytical chemistry; 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in supervisory principles/techniques.
-Or completion of undergraduate major core program in chemistry; 30 mos. exp. in analytical chemistry; 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in supervisory principles/techniques.
-Or 6 mos. exp. as Chemical Laboratory Supervisor 1, 83226.
-Or 12 mos. exp. as Laboratory Scientist 3, 83213; 6 mos. trg. or 6 mos. exp. in supervisory principles/techniques or as lead worker providing work direction & training to other employees.
Positions responsible for supervising testing of body fluids &/or tissues must also qualify under Federal Regulations, Title 20, Chapter III, Part 405 (Conditions for Coverage of Services of Independent Laboratories).
