Job Description:

The Supreme Court of Ohio is seeking to fill the position of Case Management Counsel in Office of the Clerk.  The successful candidate will ensure that matters pending before the Supreme Court of Ohio are handled in accordance with Court rules and policies.

 

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.


  • Manages cases filed in the Supreme Court of Ohio under the Rules of Practice of the Supreme Court of Ohio.

  • Participates in strategic planning for the division.  Assists in setting strategic direction and establishing biennial goals.  Works to help achieve the biennial goals.

  • Screens general cases and filings.  Ensures that cases are submitted to the Court in accordance with rules and procedures adopted by the Court.

  • Provides guidance to deputy clerks regarding case filing and processing matters; interprets rules and resolves filing issues consistent with Court and office goals.

  • Responds to non-routine public and attorney inquiries regarding procedures and status of cases.

  • Prepares memoranda for the Clerk and/or Court on procedural issues.

  • Drafts and proofs Court orders and entries in accordance with Court rulings.

  • Works closely with Office of Legal Resources/Reporter’s Office to review Court opinions and ensure pending issues have been resolved by the Court.

  • Hires, supervises, evaluates, and supports Assistant Deputy Clerks.  Coordinates daily staff responsibilities.

  • Processes attorney fee applications.

  • Coordinates routing and handling of death penalty filings.  Manages the Court’s communication network for imminent executions.

  • Provides backup for scheduling case matters.

  • Collaborates with other court offices regarding case status and procedural issues.

  • Serves as back up in the absence of Case Management Counsel assigned to cases relating to the practice of law.

  • Advises office staff on non-routine or complicated issues concerning records in appeals.

  • Drafts, reviews, and edits amendments and staff commentary to Court rules and policies.

  • Makes seminar presentations on practice before the Supreme Court.

  • Coordinates records retention projects including evaluation of retained case files, adherence to records retention and destruction schedules, transmission of case files to the Ohio Historical Society, and destruction of case files and related documents.

  • Prepares statistical reports on a quarterly and annual basis.

  • Researches legal issues as assigned.

  • Participates in special projects in the operations of the office and performs other duties as assigned.

  • Regular, reliable, and punctual attendance is required.

Minimum Qualifications: 


  • This position requires a law degree, and the ability to practice law in Ohio.  Successful candidate will possess strong writing, speaking, and computer skills.  Candidate must also be team-oriented and strive to provide excellent public service.  Legal research experience required.

  • Experience as an administrative professional, working with the public and appellate court rules preferred.
