JOB SUMMARY


Responsible for helping the Machine Shop Supervisor oversee the operational activities of the machine shop and its personnel. Help develop skills, motivate, and coach team members.  Ensure operations are carried out efficiently and safely.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS



  • Maintain an ongoing assessment of shop order requirements to support production and engineering. Help manage work assignments to machinists and determine when overtime hours are needed.  Order raw materials and tooling required to meet all manufacturing needs. Provide resource recommendations to problem solve delivery schedule issues. 

  • Communicate daily with production managers to inform them of shop order status; collaborate on priority management and problem solving.

  • Utilize the Shop Order Priority report. Ensure accurate commit dates for the next two weeks.  Help update the machine shop commitments daily, if necessary (due to machinists’ time off, priority changes, shop order problems, etc.).  

  • Ensure all assigned personnel receive appropriate training to enable them to perform their jobs effectively and efficiently

  • Cross train employees as needed so machines centers can be covered for PTO and other unforeseen absences. Regularly and proactively provide machinist’s performance input regarding programming and machine operating skills, productivity, quality, and Lean Manufacturing contributions. Help keep the employee skill matrix updated and visible.   

  • Help maintain routing times that are reflective of normal set-up and machining times. Monthly review shop order routing times and provide recommendations for adjustments.  Update routing times when recommendations are approved.  Assign the correct work centers on the routings.

  • Demonstrate Lean Manufacturing principles and contribute to the reduction of waste.

  • Help gather data and create machine shop performance metrics to measure quality, delivery, productivity, and safety.

  • Assist in new project/parts development and manufacturing processes. Effectively collaborate with engineering and supply chain individuals by providing manufacturability improvement recommendations, cost reduction ideas, quality improvement suggestions, etc.  Assist with setting up parts in IFS for manufacturing. 

  • Assist with quoting process as required.

  • Help oversee the regularly scheduled maintenance and repair program on all machines and ensure records are kept up to date.

  • Help maintain the company vehicle maintenance schedule and records.

  • Maintain procedures and work instructions to the current Quality Assurance requirements.

  • Help oversee Hazardous Waste Program, including all yearly reporting requirements.

  • Assist with special projects as assigned.

  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures.

  • Extended hours may be required to fulfill the requirements of this position.

  • Other duties as required in support of the department and the company.

QUALIFICATIONS 



  • Demonstrated leadership ability including developing supervisory skills to influence and raise the level of performance of employees in your group.

  • Ability to multi-task, work independently and employ effective planning and time management skills with limited supervision.

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and interpersonal).

  • Ability to create, lead and promote a constructive work environment. Respond to change positively .'

  • Proficiency in manufacturing modules, ERP systems and blueprint reading.

  • Demonstrated skill and accuracy in maintaining records.

  • Proven track record of process improvements.

  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage shifting priorities and tight deadlines.

  • Intermediate personal computer skills, including Microsoft Office

  • Resourceful and creative problem solver. Strong critical thinking skills to contribute to the resolution of issues  and challenges.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE



  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • 5 plus years machinist experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS



  • Lean manufacturing certification preferred.

  • Certification in CNC programming preferred
