The Legal Department of JPMorgan Chase & Co provides legal services and advice to the Firm globally. Legal is responsible for, among other things:
managing actual and potential litigation and enforcement matters, including internal reviews and investigations related to such matters
advising on products and services, including contract negotiation and documentation
advising on offering and marketing documents and new business initiatives
managing dispute resolution
interpreting existing laws, rules and regulations, and advising on changes thereto
advising on advocacy in connection with contemplated and proposed laws, rules and regulations, and
providing legal advice to the Board of Directors, the business and functions.
The Technology Legal Practice Group, which reports to the Corporate and Regulatory Law General Counsel, provides legal coverage across all lines of business (LOBs) in the areas of Intellectual Property, Cybersecurity, Privacy, Technology Transactions, and Emerging Technologies.
The Technology Legal Practice Group is currently seeking an experienced, highly motivated, results-oriented Assistant General Counsel/Vice President to join the Intellectual Property legal team. The candidate will have 10+ years of broad intellectual property experience, including patents, trade secrets, trademarks, copyrights, and internet-related legal matters. This senior-level attorney will be a key member of the Intellectual Property team and broadly responsible for supporting the firm, including driving intellectual property strategy, patent preparation and prosecution, patent litigation, trademark preparation and prosecution, trademark enforcement, brand protection, performing research on various intellectual property related issues, and creating and maintaining policies and procedures. The attorney will support all lines of business and corporate staff areas, provide thought leadership and strategic counseling, and will manage a team of patent and trademark attorneys.
The candidate will primarily:
Develop intellectual property strategy, policies, and procedures
Handle patent and trademark preparation and prosecution
Review, interpret, and analyze agreements, advising clients and partners on rights and responsibilities related to those agreements, including in light of JPMorgan Chase policies and regulatory guidance
Advise and partner with the Technology Department's IP Strategy team
Manage patent and trademark enforcement matters, including opposition and cancellation proceedings, demand letters, UDRP proceedings, and online take-downs; advise on all patent litigation matters, in partnership with Litigation colleagues
Assist with trademark clearance, registration, and prosecution
Assist with clearance of third-party intellectual property and copyright matters
Perform IP due diligence in connection with potential investments, acquisitions, and divestitures
Perform legal research and prepare legal guidance documents
Provide intellectual property legal advice and counsel to internal clients and partners
Qualifications
10+ years of relevant intellectual property practicing experience in a law firm or corporate law department
Experience handling global intellectual property issues
In-house experience strongly preferred, including experience managing an in-house legal team. An alternative individual contributor role could be considered for experienced IP attorneys without in-house management experience.
Familiarity with privacy, cybersecurity, contracting, M&A, and related regulatory and risk environments desirable
All candidates for roles in the Legal department must successfully complete a conflicts of interest clearance review prior to commencement of employment.
JD or educational equivalent required. Attorney candidates must be in compliance with all relevant licensing requirements including the requirements of the jurisdiction where the role will be located prior to commencement of employment.
