Job Description:

As a Data Center Engineer, you will work on a team responsible for facility planning, installation and upgrading  for the VeriSign Critical Facility network.

 

 Responsibilities:


  • Provide logistical and engineering support for data center services, tracking and analyzing space, power and cooling requirements for data center applications

  • Maintenance and upkeep of Critical Facility Data Center Space, Power & Environmental Infrastructure Systems & Data Center Management

  • Preventative maintenance & contract management, equipment specifications and documentation equipment repair and replacement forecasting, creating and maintaining maintenance records, documentation, deficiency tracking and repair planning 

  • Project planning, reporting and vendor management capabilities including driving the RFP process, managing service contracts,  invoicing, Methods of Procedures (MOP's,) record keeping, documentation and reporting for all issues including the preparation of reports for internal audit reviews

  • Prepare weekly & monthly status reports, to include status of each assigned job as well as assigned capital and expense and other important data

  • Work closely with internal VeriSign Operations departments to appropriately plan data center equipment deployment activities. Equipment space planning, power and environmental system load tracking and budgets. Forecast equipment space, power and environmental systems requirements. Provide support to identify site criteria and supervision of the facility design, construction management and support telephony, data and IP equipment installations

  • Work with maintenance vendors, A&E firms, contractors, and construction consultants to prepare required statement of work (SOW) for all phases of the projects

  • Produce commissioning, certification and testing checklists, certifying all facility life safety systems, security, power and environmental systems for each project and facility. Complete the punch list items with contractors and facility operations management personnel to verify proper completion of work

  • Ensure the proper alarming of all power and HVAC systems equipment. Verify that all relevant systems are wired in and monitored by our Network Operations Center (NOC)

 

Essential Functions:        


  • Must have a working knowledge of various power and mechanical HVAC systems, 480 v 3 phase utility power, essential diesel engine generator systems, critical UPS systems and - 48 volt dc power plant systems and chiller plants so as to be able to operate and determine \ forecasted loads for the purpose of maintaining, sizing and designing power and mechanical systems required to support critical facilities & data centers. 

  • Must be able to establish working relationships with many people within and outside of the project team. Must be very effective at informal communication in a one-on-one fashion, as well as formal communications with large groups of people to effectively communicate project related information.  Must also possess outstanding written communication skills which are typically used in the development of project related documentation

  • Must have effective organizational skills. Working with the project team, a large part of the Engineer's role is to take a complicated functional description for a project and organize it in such a way that a detailed analysis can be performed to determine the level of effort, cost, risk and resources required to complete the project. During the execution of the project, Engineer will spend a considerable amount of effort organizing and distributing project related information such as project plans and project status information. Must be able to track and support several projects at once

  • Must possess a level of understanding of the technology and functional details of the project to be able to properly identify and prioritize risks and issues. Must be able to explain the technology and functionality to senior management and customers in a clear and concise manner

  • Carry a pager or cell phone and respond on site to emergency situations on a 7 x 24 hour basis

  • Must be able to travel nationwide on a periodic basis: Travel to other critical facilities, data center or job sites nationwide for facility maintenance support, project meetings, inspections and commissioning testing. 7 x 24 hr work availability is a must and is based upon Operations and building requirements

  • Participate in site project surveys, identifying structural, power, and HVAC, security and Operations facility requirements

  • Know and understand building, electrical, fire and life safety codes and regulations

  • Responsible for producing project budget estimates and tracking project cost and invoice approvals

 

 

Requirements:


  • 2+ years in the telecom or related industry experience, with emphasis on facility engineering maintenance, power and mechanical systems engineering & operations

  • Requires ability to effectively communicate and interface with internal and external personnel

  • Must have appropriate industry knowledge and capabilities to operate and maintain data center & telecommunications equipment, power and environmental infrastructure systems

  • Must possess the willingness and physical ability to access, operate and maintain building rooftop cooling units, high voltage power systems, diesel fuel containment / storage and critical power and mechanical equipment areas

  • Must be capable of accessing critical HVAC and Power room areas, building roof tops, infrastructure equipment yards, cramped spaces, and areas within a computer room raised floor environment

  • Technical skills preferred include: MS Office and MS VISIO or Auto CAD and MS Project

  • HS Diploma or GED or Technical School, equivalent job related experience
