We are currently seeking a Mortgage Underwriter position for Madison, WI, Evansville, IN, Chaska, MN, Tecumseh, MI, Grand Rapids, MI or Holland, MI region. The Mortgage Underwriter is responsible for ensuring quality loans for the company by underwriting and evaluating Conventional residential mortgage applications originated by the company's mortgage loan officers. This includes approving, counteroffering or denying residential loan applications within the department's stated service level agreement(s), as well as working with mortgage loan officers to assist them in qualifying loan applicants.

Responsibilities:


  • Underwriting residential mortgage applications originated by the company's mortgage loan officers, including appraisal review. As a part of the underwriter process, the underwriter will approve, counteroffer, or decline residential loan applications within delegated lending authority, ensuring that files are fully underwritten to applicable guidelines including those of the secondary market.

  • Stay current with various industry and organizational trends and changes including changes with underwriting guidelines, mortgage products, PMI updates, while serving as an 'expert' in various areas related to mortgage underwriting.

  • Monitoring the department email box to complete requests and research while providing guidance to questions from the Loan Officer, Sales Manager and Processor as well as processing all the Prequal declines.

  • Assist with special projects and assignments as requested, including Dial & Learn presentations to mortgage loan officers


Experience/Qualifications:

  • Education: Associate's or bachelor's degree preferred

  • Yrs of Experience: Varies based upon level. Typical required years of related experience by level are - Mortgage Underwriter I (1 + years), Mortgage Underwriter II (3+ years)

  • Certifications/Advanced Degree: Tier II Underwriters must possess VA or FHA Endorsements

  • PC/Microsoft Office experience required

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong administrative/organizational skills


Administrator Levels:

Mortgage Underwriter I (Grade 46): An entry-level underwriter who possesses basic technical skills, knowledge and ability. An underwriter I primarily reviews conventional mortgage loans. A Mortgage Underwriter I generally has loan approval limits of up to $500,000.

Mortgage Underwriter II (Grade 47): An experienced underwriter generally with 3 + years of experience, a Mortgage Underwriter II is responsible for underwriting mortgage loans ranging up to the most complex, including FHA, VA and specialty loans. A Mortgage Underwriter II possesses strong technical skills and generally has loan approval limits up to $650,000.
