Senior Network Systems Engineer

Location:

The position is located at the Corporate Office in Round Rock, Texas.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The position incumbent is expected to perform the following essential duties and responsibilities of the position with reasonable accommodation.


  • Designs, upgrades, and maintains network infrastructure and network-related systems/appliances including routers, switches, firewalls, mainframe networking, telecommunication, intrusion detection/prevention, wireless networking, servers, storage area network (SAN), and print services.

  • Performs advanced level research, evaluate, design and deliver technology solutions in collaboration with cross-functional teams.

  • In conjunction with the security team, ensures that all networking and telecommunication systems are running in accordance with company and regulatory security requirements.

  • Ensures network capacity, availability, and performance by monitoring and tuning as needed.

  • Determines the source of network problems that disrupt production activities and notifies management of the need for corrective action. Identifies opportunities to optimize and expand network services for business operations and for corporate‑approved business projects.

  • Act as a technical resource for call center, telecommunications, and LAN/WAN/WLAN services. 

  • Leads and develops project plans with milestones, measuring progress against goals, providing technical leadership, instruction, and direction to team members and less experienced engineers.

  • Identifies opportunities and implement solutions that support ability to achieve system availability goals, supporting network and telecommunication requirements for internal business units and external customers.

  • Provides specific detailed information for equipment, hardware, firmware, and software recommendations.

  • Interacts with external technology service providers, vendors, and customers.

  • Supports technology strategy in conjunction with other Information Technology teams, Shared Services, existing infrastructure, and future business needs, making sound recommendations for technology solutions.

  • Acts as a good steward of Trellis’ resources to ensure control of IT budgets.

  • Supports Information Technology management in establishing Trellis’ technical vision and support all aspects of the company’s technological development.

  • Participates in Disaster Recovery planning, solutions, and periodic exercises.

  • Participates in 24x7 operational support including on-call rotation.

Non-Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Supports Information Technology’s vision, strategic direction, development and future growth.

  • Supports and mentors Information Technology team members in network technology and topology as appropriate.

  • Assist with special projects as assigned.

  • All other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • Strong reliance on sound, independent professional and technical judgment. Decisions and recommendations will significantly affect both internal and external customers. 

  • Demonstrated in-depth understanding of networking and other technology infrastructure concepts and trends

  • Ability to create accurate network diagrams and documentation for design and planning network systems

  • Ability to implement, administer, and troubleshoot network infrastructure devices, including wireless access point, firewall, routers, switches, and controllers. Specifically, Fortinet, Cisco, F5, and Dell equipment and appliances.

  • Ability to communicate functional and technical topics at multiple levels within organization

  • Independent and rapid action is required to resolve problem situations that may affect hundreds of corporate computer system clients

  • Critical skills in computer center operations, systems, and procedures

  • Technical skills relating to network hardware, firmware, and software

  • Ability to work independently or in teams to research and solve complex technical problems

  • Strong interpersonal and team building skills when interacting with internal and external customers

  • Ability to quickly learn and apply new ideas and materials

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing, in a courteous and polite manner

  • Ability to simultaneously handle several concurrent activities

  • Proven ability to apply modern technology to complex problems

  • Experienced with modern security technology and concepts

  • Ability to travel as needed to alternate company locations

  • Self-motivated and able to socialize ideas as well as mentor others

Qualifications:

Education

Required:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field is required. Experience beyond the minimum work experience requirement can be substituted for college hours on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred:

  • One or more of the following certifications are preferred:

  • Fortinet Network Security Expert (NSE 4/5/6)

  • Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA)

  • Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP)

  • Cisco Certified Design Associate (CCDA)

  • VMWare Certified Professional, Network Virtualization (VCP-NV)

  • VMWare Certified Advanced Professional, Network Virtualization (VCAP-NV)

Experience

Required:


  • 7-9 years of progressively responsible experience in a medium to large enterprise involving large scale distributed and technically diverse environments, including at least five (5) years working with infrastructure software, hardware, firmware

  • Experience/knowledge of networking tools/concepts/protocols including: LAN, WAN, Wi-Fi, IPv4, IPv6, DHCP, TCP/IP, MPLS, SD-WAN, Ethernet, IP Networking, VoIP, SIP, DNS, VTAM, SNA, VPN, multi-factor authentication, BGP, IS-IS, OSPF

  • Platforms such as VMWare NSX, Hyper V

  • Fortinet products, Cisco products, Dell ready-nodes/servers/switches, TrendMicro products

  • Windows and Linux Operating systems

  • Encryption technologies and threat detection

  • Experience/knowledge with current server and storage hardware and virtualization technologies

Preferred:


  • Experience with FireEye, Tenable Security Center, Nessus vulnerability products

  • Experience with Public and Private Cloud Architectures

Physical and Mental Demands:


  • Regularly must move about inside the office

Work Environment:


  • Typically works 40 hours per week in office environment and will periodically require after-hours work, remote work, weekend work, or other demands to meet deadlines.

  • Work is in a cubicle work environment.

  • Work environment is climate controlled with no substantial exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
