Job Description:

Meyer Utility Structures, an Arcosa Subsidiary, is looking for an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager for our manufacturing facility located in Steele, AL. The EHS Manager will manage environment, health and safety and risk associated with business and company operations. Build the safety culture of the facility to achieve a zero-injury workplace. Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, county and local safety related regulations. In a proactive manner, plans, monitors and implements the company’s safety programs to ensure a safe, healthy and injury/accident-free work environment.


Site-Specific Safety Plan


• Implement, improve and maintain company EHS programs across the plant.
• Develop plant leaders to be owners of safety in their areas and ensure they participate in the growth of the safety culture.
• Support the improvement of the plants proactive positive safety culture to lead to an Accident-Free workplace.
• Automate and refine safety inspection processes to ensure they are being done properly and are making a difference in plant and behavior improvements.
• Implement and improve employee involvement systems and processes.
• Build EHS calendar system to hit target dates and repeat continuously.
• Be visible on the shop floor and engage employees to drive self-accountability for safe work practices, a reduction in risk taken and the elimination of complacency.
• Support operations leadership to assist with planning, leading and participating in plant safety meetings.
• Review and update monthly plant-specific safety metrics.
• Develop and ensure safe equipment operating procedures exist for all equipment and tasks.
• Partner with the Production and Maintenance Teams to ensure all machines are operated properly and equipment is maintained in good condition.
• Develop and implement strategies to streamline plant audits, inspections, and corrective actions.
• Keeps the facility management team informed of safety concerns and leading EHS metrics.
• Develop and implement EHS specific initiatives as it pertains to Environmental, Social and Governance initiatives (ESG) – landfill use reduction, electric use reduction, gas use reduction, recycling initiatives,etc.
• Participate and facilitate the Safety Committee at the to ensure the Committee’s effectiveness & direction is aligned with the Facility’s expectations.


Audit
• Inspect facility to detect existing and potential accident and health hazards.
• Determine corrective or preventative measures, assign responsibility, and follow up to ensure the corrective measures have been implemented.
• Conduct frequent plant safety inspections to ensure safety procedures are in place, accurate and up to date.
• Anticipate the next accident. Utilize leading indicators to adjust plant wide focus to prevent the next accident.
• Analyze accident causes, and hazards, and implement solutions to prevent repeat accidents.
• Develop and improve systems that monitor equipment, record and compile data, and tracks corrective actions through completion.


Risk Management
• Maintain Emergency Preparedness Plans for medical, fire and natural disaster and keep plant trained on these plans.
• Manage and improve Worker’s Compensation strategies and represent the company on Worker’s Compensation matters.
• Help maintain a proactive fitness-for-duty process with local Occupational Medical clinics.
• Remain current on federal, state, county and local safety regulations and keep management advised of new or revised regulations.


Training & Communication
• Train supervisors and employees in plant safety practices, safe equipment operating techniques, and fire prevention for the plant and office area.
• Conduct supervisors training and development so that they have the skills necessary to manage their teams to zero injury culture.
• Perform safety orientation for new hires and contractors coming on site.
• Integrate safety into job training programs.
• Facilitate training for emergency response teams and Emergency Preparedness Plans.
• Maintain training records in the employee files.
• Conduct new employees and contractor safety orientation.
• Provide training and education to all levels of employees, as required, by Federal and State safety regulations.
• Provide quality safety communication and information that assists in keeping all employees engaged in safety.
• Develop and implement safety awareness campaigns.


Compliance & Reporting
• Implement, improve and streamline compliance and reporting requirements required from both internal and external (OSHA, EPA, DOT, etc.) entities.
• Escalate any federal, state or municipal EHS or risk management requests complaints or investigations, including, but not limited to OSHA to the Business Leadership and Corporate Safety group.
• Ensure incident reports are prepared and communicated in a timely manner.


Support
• Represent the plant/company in community or industry safety groups and programs.
• Maintain a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that engages.
• Frequently communicate with Business Leadership and Corporate Safety to keep them apprised of pertinent issues.


What you'll need: 


Required Education and Certifications



  • Bachelor’s degree in a safety science, safety management, industrial hygiene, environmental science, occupational health, engineering or other industrial discipline work experience.

  • Equivalent work experience of 3-5 years in an Industrial/Manufacturing Environment.

  • Certifications preferred: Certified Safety Professional (CPS); Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH); Associates Safety Professional (ASP); Graduate Safety Professional (GSP)

Required Knowledge and Experience


Knowledge of:



  • Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA)

  • American National Standards Institute (ANSI)

  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)

  • Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

  • Workers Compensation regulations

At least 1-3 years of operational / manufacturing / plant safety experience preferred.

Reporting Relationships



  • EHS Manager reports to the Plant Manager and functionally to the BU Director of EHS.
