Department's Website:mechanical-engineering.uark.eduSummary of Job Duties:The Academic Counselor and Coach counsel prospective and current undergraduate and graduate students in the mechanical program on degree requirements, course schedules, course planning, and career and educational objectives. This position provides advising support and assistance to students to ensure that they persist to degree completion through activities such as mentoring, reviewing their academic progress, providing them with timely and accurate information about the degree plan, and referring them to appropriate campus resources as needed.

The Academic Counselor and Coach are knowledgeable of the unique needs and challenges of and transfer students, provides them with adequate support and guides them through degree completion. This position works closely with program faculty and assists them with the development of student enrollment and progress reports, handbooks, websites, and other informational materials. The Academic Counselor and Coach serve as the primary contact point for prospective students interested in pursuing a BSME or graduate degree, assists recruiting efforts, responds to all inquiries, and makes presentations about the program to various audiences as needed. This position maintains accurate, complete, and updated records on the status and progress of students and reports result as needed.

The Academic Counselor and Coach also provide individualized academic support to students (i.e., assist students with skills such as time management, critical thinking, test preparation/anxiety, note-taking, etc.), facilitates academic success workshops, and collaborates with faculty and staff in the department and college and other retention initiatives on campus.

Regular, reliable and non-disruptive attendance is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others.Qualifications:

Salary Information:$40,000 - $50,000 (commensurate with education and experience)

Minimum Qualifications:
-
Master's degree in counseling, career counseling, college student personnel, higher education administration, engineering, or a related field
-
At least one year graduate and/or full-time experience with student services programs or advising students

Preferred Qualifications:
-
At least two years of full-time experience with student services programs or advising students
-
At least one year of experience advising or coaching at-risk students
-
At least one year of experience advising or coaching science, technology, engineering, math (STEM) students
-
Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills for individual meetings and small or large group presentations
-
Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills
-
Demonstrated knowledge of student success and student persistence practices
-
Demonstrated knowledge of UA student resources

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
-
Knowledge of the organization and administration of various higher education academic and social programs
-
Knowledge of UA campus and community resources
-
Knowledge of state, federal, and campus rules, regulations, and requirements related to campus academic and social programs
-
Ability to coordinate the activities of campus academic and/or social programs
-
Ability to evaluate collected information and formulate into recommendations

Ability to compile information into report form
