Responsibilities

The UCLA Neuroscience Genomics Core (UNGC) is seeking to hire a Staff Research Associate to join a team of researchers operating a genotyping, gene expression, epigenetic and sequencing facility. UNGC is a core facility serving UCLA neuroscience labs and offers genomic scale screening services utilizing a range of highly automated and specialized genotyping and sequencing platforms. In this role, you will be running a DNA extraction service in support of a large scale population based genotyping project as well as a separate multi-year genetic study of severe mental illness. Job duties include:

Perform all logistical and biochemical protocol steps involved in the automated extraction of genomic DNA from samples of whole blood.
DNA QC, plating and sample normalization to prepare samples for genotyping including sample re-plating and DNA quantification assays.
Maintain computerized databases of samples received, experimental designs, data output and laboratory QC records.

Work will take place in a BSL2 facility and incumbent will be required to undertake a safety training course in bloodborne pathogens and to maintain all necessary safety certifications. Please note non-standard working hours or scheduling may be required to comply with UCLA COVID-19 laboratory staffing density guidelines.

Qualifications

A strong background in molecular biology, genetics, genomics, computer science or a related field
A combination experience of bench work and operation of automated systems including robotic liquid handlers, genome scale sequencers, confocal laser scanners and mass spec devices
Proficiency in molecular biology bench work, such as PCR and sequencing
1 year+ of post-grad experience in biochemical techniques and molecular biology, strongly preferred
Meticulous and detail-oriented work habits, excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently
Bachelor degree in life sciences, preferred
Proficiency with Windows and Macintosh operating systems, Microsoft Office and familiarity with FileMaker Pro, preferred
