Purpose
The Cyber & Applied Data Analytics Division in the National Security Sciences Directorate of Oak Ridge National Laboratory invites applications for the position of Researcher in the area of Information Visualization.

ORNL is developing and deploying solutions to improve the national security of our nation. We are looking for researchers who want to tackle real-world problems using visualization and user interaction methods to join our team to help make our country safer.

Responsibilities
Successful candidates for the position of Post Doctoral or Staff Research Scientist will work in a collaborative research and development environment focusing on designing and implementing data visualization applications in applications of national security. The position requires innovative thinking to design user interaction and information visualization methods for real world problems in the national security space. Additionally, candidates will have the opportunity to develop solutions that integrate visualizations and data analytics. Qualified applicants will be expected to design, implement, and evaluate web-based visual analytics applications.

Successful candidates will be expected to work collaboratively in multi-disciplinary teams with experts in a variety of fields. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to participate in national and international forums for the development of significant new concepts or novel approaches. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to help write peer-reviewed papers, technical reports, and proposals for internal and external release.

Qualifications
- The position requires a Ph.D. or M.S. in Computer Science or a related field. Candidates must have a proven record of web-based programming, excellent communications skills, and a strong desire to work in a team environment. Candidates who have contributed to open-source projects are preferred.
- Research experience pertaining to information visualization, visual analytics, human-computer interaction, and/or user evaluations.
- Excellent programming skills.
- Hands-on skills and experience with foundational front-end web programming technologies, including JavaScript (experience with React is preferred).
- Hands-on skills and experience with client-side web-based visualization tools (experience with d3js is preferred).
- Experience working on Linux/Unix platforms.
- Excellent communication skills for conveying technical material to both scientists and non-scientists in both written and oral presentations.
- Self-disciplined work ethic and eagerness to tackle challenging research problems.
- This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
