Overview:
We are seeking a Research Associate with experience in making and testing solid state batteries with Li metal anodes. The associate will conduct both fundamental and applied research on solid state Li metal batteries and electrolytes. This research will include investigating vacuum deposition of battery materials, testing solid state Li metal batteries, solid state electrolyte synthesis, and characterization of solid electrolyte-electrode interfaces. This position resides in the Energy Storage Group, Chemical Transformations Section, Chemical Sciences Division (CSD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Aid in developing methodologies for vacuum deposition of thin battery materials.
- Synthesize, fabricate, and test solid electrolytes and full cell solid state batteries with Li metal anodes
- Develop methodologies to characterize the interfaces between solid state electrolytes and electrodes
- Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner.
- Develop proposals to expand activities in solid-state batteries
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.
- Maintain strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.

Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD in materials science, materials engineering, or a related field
- Experience with the synthesis and testing of solid state electrolytes and solid state batteries

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with vacuum processing such as sputtering and thermal evaporation
- Experience in the synthesis and processing of polymer electrolytes and/or ceramic electrolytes
- Experience with a variety of materials characterization techniques which could include differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, small and wide-angle X-ray scattering and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and neutron scattering
- Excellent written and oral communication skills as demonstrated in peer reviewed publications and professional presentations
- Ability to work with a measure of autonomy and a willingness to participate creatively in a collaborative team environment
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
