Description of job (as it will be advertised): Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants for an Experimental Plasma Physicist to participate in the development, use, and interpretation of boundary plasma diagnostics in support of the U.S. DOE Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) Program in the Office of Science. The near-term focus will be on instruments to help provide solutions to overcome power exhaust and particle control challenges in fusion energy systems.

In this role you will report to the Power Exhuast and Particle Control Group Leader in the Burning Plasma Section of the Fusion Energy Division and will interface closely with scientists and engineers from both within ORNL as well as external collaborators.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
- Oversee the design, fabrication and implementation of bolometry and other boundary plasma measurement tools on domestic and international fusion facilities.
- Work to create partnerships with industry, universities, and national laboratories to identify and lead research proposals in response to solicitations, identifying where ORNL experience and capabilities can make an impact.
- Execute complex research projects to help develop combined science and engineering solutions to overcome power exhaust and particle control challenges in fusion energy systems.
- Communicate results of analyses and experiments through presentations, reports, conference papers, and peer-reviewed journals.
- Prepare work proposals, cost and schedule estimates, and risk assessment as required for delivery of custom solutions.
- Provide scientific direction, guidance and mentorship to fellow scientists and staff as a key member of a power exhaust and particle control research team

Qualifications
- Candidate requires a Doctorate in physics or nuclear engineering (or related field).
- Candidate should have at least two years of post graduate experience of technical experience in experimental research environment.
- Demonstrated success in at least some aspect of designing, building, and operating plasma diagnostics and measurement systems for fusion plasma devices.
- Excellent communication skills as evidenced by previous reports, papers, and presentations.
- Demonstrated ability to work individually and/or as part of a team, including participation at remote facilities, and contribute based on knowledge and experience.

An ideal candidate will have one or more of the following qualifications:
- Demonstrated at least one successful project in all aspects of designing, building, and operating plasma diagnostics and measurement systems for tokamaks and/or stellarators.
- Experience in one or more of the follow areas: bolometry, visible spectroscopy, infrared imaging, fiber optic temperature sensing and/or calorimetry.
- Demonstrated experience and success in providing scientific direction, guidance and mentorship within a multidisciplinary, fast-paced, team environment.
- Experience with scientific data management systems and/or control software for precision scientific equipment.
