The Department of Natural Resources provides management for the CALS property of the Arnot Forest. The Arnot Forest is a managed forest with facilities used in teaching, research, and extension. The Arnot Forest provides forest management and maple syrup production in support research, extension and outreach and instruction.

This will be a half-time (0.50 FTE) position that is responsible for serving as an onsite assistant to research activities related to the maple production programs at Cornell's Arnot Forest located in Van Etten, NY. This involves maintaining extensive vacuum tubing collection system, tapping trees, operating sap collection equipment, operating oil-fired evaporator, storing syrup, moving syrup barrels, assessing syrup quality, bottling syrup, and participating in safe and sanitary practices and work areas.

The position includes assisting with the marketing of maple syrup and delivery to fill syrup orders. The position will meet with visitors to the Arnot Forest, conduct tours and educational programs as needed and provide logistical support to summer interns and outside researchers. The position will assist with the operation, cleanliness, maintenance, and repairs of Arnot Forest facilities and equipment.

Responsible for assisting with compliance with Cornell, state and federal requirements related to all Arnot operations including facilities, vehicles, and food safety. The position will include working in collaboration with seasonal staff for preparation, collection, processing and storage of maple sap and syrup to ensure efficiency and safety of operations in a high-risk environment. This position receives limited supervision from campus and the incumbent needs to be self-directed, responsible, and capable of good judgment in a variety of routine and non-routine situations.

Substantial manual labor is involved requiring physical fitness and awareness of safety issues involved in operation and maintenance activities. Extension and rigorous field work in all seasons is required. Represent the University to the public and community leaders as liaison to partners throughout NY and the region. Involved in informal and formal educational interactions. Timeliness and reliability of actions are essential.

One-year appointment with possible extension depending on performance and funding.

Qualifications:
- High School Diploma with 2-3 years of experience in maple production. Experience operating and maintaining an oil fired maple sap evaporator, commercial scale reverse osmosis equipment, syrup filter press, and vacuum pumps.
- Experience with maple sap main line and lateral line installation and repair. Experience in tractor operation and maintenance.
- Must have and maintain a valid NYS driver's license.
- Substantial manual labor is involved requiring physical fitness.
- Must be able to lift heavy objects, and move more than 50 pounds; must be able to work from heights of over ten feet.
- Must have awareness of operational and safety issues involved in forestry, equipment operations, and facility maintenance activities.
- Must be able to work independently.
- Must be personable, flexible and, possess excellent organizational and oral and written English communication skills.
- Must take pride in daily work and be comfortable with multitasking.
- Must have the ability to develop an effective working relationship with a wide variety of faculty, staff, and students as well as outside clientele.
- Must exercise sound and ethical judgment when acting on behalf of the University.
- Establish goals and objectives and determine methods to accomplish these goals using effective time management.
- Demonstrate skills in problem solving, critical thinking, and proper judgment in accomplishing tasks whether acting independently or participating effectively on a team.
