About the Job

Provides comprehensive, developmental academic advising to first year students in all majors and undeclared students in all class years, with a focus on academic coaching and support that contributes to student persistence (e.g. enrollment into the second semester and the second year). Assists in the planning, development and implementation of a first year and undeclared advising program that supports successful University transitions, student engagement and cross-unit and cross-division collaborations, driven by individualized interactions that connect students to the appropriate campus services and resources. Interprets and explains academic and administrative University policies and processes to first year and undeclared students. Advises and counsels prospective and current students and arranges for referrals to University support services. Uses professional concepts to provide prescriptive advice, working independently on issues that are straightforward and/or have clear guidelines. May supervise student workers.

Qualifications

* Bachelor s degree and one year of progressively responsible related experience, or equivalent experience/training required.

* Masters degree or equivalent in higher education, counseling or student affairs preferred.

* Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques that support the success of first year and undeclared students required.

* Ability to understand and interpret University policies, procedures and requirements required.

* Strong written and verbal communication skills, including active listening required.

* Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving required.

* Experience with common University-specific computer application programs required.

* Ability to multi-task required.
