Summary:

Working under direction of Engineering Manager, the Product Development Engineer will support the mechanical development of novel consumer products that have national and international exposure to millions of consumers. This involves working with a creative, collaborative team of engineering and design professionals, test labs, marketing, industrial design, and sales towards the successful launch of new consumer products.  This engineer will work within the Advanced Engineering group developing advanced line-set technology, which includes thermoplastic tube, assembly integration of Quick-Connects, and development of other components

Primary Responsibilities:


  • Lead all aspects of design and development for new products, production equipment, processes and standards related to production

  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team to design and build robust products/processes, including developing, commercializing and sustaining components to meet customer and market needs

  • Perform cross-functional collaborative development of full line-set or bundle assemblies

  • Perform line-set integration, including customer introduction and approval processes

  • Perform supplemental design, engineering and validation of new components and tube

  • Develop test plans, oversee validation builds/testing and document accordingly through DVPR/PVPR

  • Build knowledge in best practices, processes and customers through ongoing professional development

  • Influence multi-functional team members to achieve stretch goals

  • Develop and create end-product drawings and specifications while accurately defining requirements of design intent

  • Release and maintain content within PLM system

  • Perform CAD studies on new development designs

  • Create prototype and sample tooling using CAD

  • Create test plans using OEM requirements

  • Follow up with test labs to make sure testing is on schedule

  • Purchase benchmarking parts and make studies at dealerships as necessary

  • Tear down lease or fleet vehicles to understand competitive part functionality and assembly sequencing

  • Create DFMEA’s for new product and material developments

  • Interface with outside suppliers and vehicles to assure equipment is working properly

  • Prepare test samples and working prototypes as required

  • Understand Cooper Standard product lines outside of main discipline

  • Provide informal guidance and mentor new team members

  • Ensure all customer specifications and requirements are met

  • May, on occasion, be required to perform duties other than those specified in this description

Education and Qualifications:


  • Four year engineering degree or relevant industry experience preferred

  • At least 5+ years of related Design or other Engineering experience required

  • Experience with developing test plans, overseeing lab testing and DVPR

  • Experience working within PLM release systems strongly preferred

  • Injection molded plastic component design and material selection experience preferred

  • Extruded thermoplastic tube and material selection experience preferred

  • Plastics manufacturing and processing experience preferred

  • CAE experience preferred (FEA, moldflow, etc.)

  • CAD experience preferred

  • Experience with 8D, fishbone and other problem-solving techniques preferred

  • Ability to solve complex problems and communicate complex information

  • Demonstrate meeting timing needs and shows good planning skills

  • Strong technical and mechanical aptitude

  • Ability to work under tight deadlines

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office

  • Self-motivated, highly organized, detail oriented and able to manage projects with minimal supervision, including multiple projects and multi-task situations

  • Ability to assess and identify design alternatives

  • Ability to prioritize, assess and mitigate risk

  • Ability to adapt to various customer environments

  • Ability to perform in a fast-paced working environment

  • Willingness and ability to travel, as necessary

Work Environment/Work Conditions:


  • Professional Office Environment, remote when necessary

  • Must wear proper personal protection equipment while on manufacturing floor

  • Travel to manufacturing facilities or customer locations when required

  • Equipment used requires proper training on the potential for and avoidance of injury
