Summary

This role is responsible for supporting the Site Engineering Team, which is responsible for daily plant support, new product development/scale-up, and the continuous improvement of processes that manufacture various Dentsply Sirona products. This role will work with a cross-functional team to perform tasks with potentially complex chemicals, including design set-up and experiments at both lab and commercial/production scale, product sampling and testing, and supporting the manufacturing operations when needed. This person will be responsible for maintaining data integrity by keeping thorough records of process/experimental data, reporting and documenting revisions/updates for the ongoing improvement of Dentsply Sirona products and processes. This role will interface with a wide-variety of functions in order to meet business goals and is always expected to contribute to a safe working environment.

Key Responsibilities


  • Follow all site environmental, health, safety, quality guidelines and maintain compliance with OSHA, FDA, cGMP, and ISO regulations.
  • Understand how to set-up, operate, calibrate, clean or troubleshoot various instruments and equipment (chemical balance scales, reactors, measuring pumps, distillation equipment, vacuum pump, glassware set-ups, mixers, temperature probes, heaters, etc.).
  • Understand how to properly handle hazardous chemicals in order to safely take samples, prepare chemical solutions according to formulas, or adjust batches as needed.
  • Evaluate materials, methods, and/or chemical processes for new product development, daily plant support, or continuous improvement on a pilot-scale or commercial-scale level.
  • Test samples and analyze material properties such as density, moisture, viscosity, particle size distribution, color, or other necessary parameters.
  • Compile, summarize and analyze data from experiments and manufacturing in a neat, orderly, legible condition - including preparing necessary reports and presentations.
  • Obtain a working knowledge of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Manufacturing Instructions (MIs) and other technical documents (i.e. Safety Data Sheets) and utilize the electronic document management system to retrieve and update critical documents.
  • Work with a cross-functional team (Engineering, Quality, R&D, EHS, Operations) to develop protocols, including qualification documents in compliance with internal policies.
  • Maintain a clean, safe laboratory/pilot-scale area with good-housekeeping and storage of materials and equipment.
  • Other duties as request, directed or assigned.

Education/ Experience


  • Associate degree required or bachelor's degree in technical field preferred or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a chemical laboratory or pilot-scale setting, preferably in a medical device/pharmaceutical industry or ISO certified manufacturing environment (internships or graduate research will be considered).
  • Preferred qualifications include knowledge of calibration program requirements, knowledge of regulations governing medical devices and quality standards.

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Employee is expected to have good interpersonal skills and professional attitude while working with Production, Engineering, Quality, R&D and other personnel.
  • Computer skills are necessary, in order to navigate common software such as Microsoft Office to complex lab and documentation software.
  • Math skills, including calculation of percentages, use of calculators, and perform basic formulas and functions (averages, range limits, converting units).
  • Good observation or organizational skills. Must be able to observe plant manufacturing and filling operations and compare what's written procedures or specifications versus what is being performed and document observations.

  • Must be able to use various pieces of manufacturing and test equipment, such as mixers, Instron testing machine, color meter, Horiba particle size analyzer, etc.


  • Read, analyze and interpret procedures, equipment/process specifications, and associated regulations.

  • Ability to define problems and draw valid conclusions through the collection of data and facts. Apply originality and experience towards improving the manufacturing processes.

  • Ability to write technical reports, business correspondence, validation protocols, product specifications, SOP's and MI's.


  • Ability to effectively and clearly communicate during one-on-one and small group situations, including presenting technical information and responding to questions from internal and external colleagues.
