  • Travel is required with this position. Schedule will be 2 days at the South location and 2 days at the Round Rock location.

Position purpose

The Veterinary Technician plays an integral role in the advanced veterinary care provided by Central Texas Veterinary Internal Medicine. This role goes hand and hand with our purpose statement of enhancing the quality of life for our patients.

Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks

 All duties are performed under the responsible supervision of a licensed veterinarian as specified in the Texas Administrative Code of the Texas Veterinary Medical Board.


  1. Walking, cleaning, feeding hospitalized patients.

  2. Basic inventory and stocking duties as required.

  3. Kennel duties as required.

  4. Restrain animals for examinations, procedures and treatments.

  5. Administering medical treatments (oral medications, SQ and IV injections, enemas) as ordered by doctor.

  6. Computer entry skills (invoicing, prescriptions, MRE’s).

  7. Client communication and education (admits/discharges, client demonstrations, phone communication, messages, client call- backs).

  8. Perform routine laboratory procedures.

  9. Prepare lab samples for submissions to outside labs.

  10. Routine radiography.

  11. Placement of IV catheters.

  12. Perform venipuncture.

  13. Set up and prepare for chemotherapy treatments.

  14. Administer chemotherapy at direction of the doctor.

  15. Prepare patients for anesthesia by placing IV catheter, inducing anesthesia, intubation and hooking up to monitoring devices.

  16. Monitor anesthesia and patients recovering from anesthesia by checking vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, BP, ECG and SPO2

  17. Prepare prescriptions as ordered by the doctor: Appropriate container, labeling, directions, warning.

  18. Maintain cleanliness and order in work areas.

Physical Effort

The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the primary functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to bend, stoop, walk, sit, talk and listen; may be required to walk or stand for long periods of time; will use hands to manipulate, handle or feel; will reach with hands and arms. The employee is often required to lift and carry animals or materials weighing forty pounds or less without assistance. Employees will be expected to ask for assistance with lifting or carrying animals or materials over forty pounds.

  1. Exposure to chemotherapy agents

  2. Radiation exposure (x-ray,  CT Scan)

  3. Possible hazards associated with contagious diseases and controlled substances

  4. Exposures to unpleasant odors and noise

  5. Exposure to aggressive patients, bites, scratches and animal wastes

Qualifications - Essential

High School diploma or equivalent. Veterinary technician experience required.  Licensure preferred but not necessary. Basic customer service skills required. Basic computer skills are necessary. Basic phone etiquette.
