Job Summary:

The Staff Design Architect is responsible for providing reliable and responsive Architectural support to ensure effective and efficient operations of U.S. Government owned and occupied facilities, associated installed equipment, and infrastructure on Kirtland AFB, NM.


  • Serve as an experienced and independent engineer/architect in the field of construction engineering and management.

  • Involved in the design and specifications of projects, using their expertise to evaluate the client’s expectations and needs and then develop ideas for the structure. May be required to do research into local and federal laws and building codes. May also confer with other architects and designers to create a design plan to present to the client.

  • Create design models, and may craft sketches or blueprints or use computer design software programs to build models. May be required to edit and adjust these plans multiple times until the client is satisfied with the design.

  • Present ideas, models and plans to the clients. Must know how to best illustrate their vision to clients.

  • Perform facilities analysis (e.g., functional or economic development, expansion capabilities, circulation, physical security, physical and sociological community interrelationships) to verify if operational needs and requirements are met.

  • Analyze facility measurement and space utilization data to address changing facility requirements and missions.

  • Oversee the preparation of project documentation (e.g., construction, repair, and maintenance project development; real estate and environmental documents) to ensure the efficient delivery of facility planning products and services.

  • Plan for future needs by evaluating existing conditions, confirming long range needs, and comparing available assets with approved facility requirements.

  • Provide assistance and technical guidance to other engineers/architects, or other U.S. Air Force business/support lines or functional areas as appropriate, exercising management and administrative skills in the execution of projects.

  • Manage priorities and provide technical recommendations/solutions to complex problems encountered during the administration of the construction contracts.

Minimum Qualification:


  • Each Staff Design Architect shall have a bachelor's degree in engineering from a program certified by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) or in architecture from a program certified by the National Architecture Accrediting Board. Each Staff Design Architect shall meet the following New Mexico State Licensure requirements applicable to their discipline:

  • Each Staff Design Architect shall have and maintain professional registration as an architect under the requirements of New Mexico Board of Examiners for Architects (; and must have and maintain a LEED Accredited Professional Building Design + Construction (LEED AP BD+C) credential.

  • Each Staff Design Architect shall have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in facility and infrastructure design. 

    • If a Staff Design Architect does not have professional registration in New Mexico on their date of hire, those Staff Design Architect personnel shall submit all required paperwork for licensure by endorsement, comity, reciprocity, etc. to the applicable New Mexico PE or RA board no later than 14 calendar days after their first day of work on site at Kirtland AFB.  

    • If any of the Staff Design Architect personnel do not have professional registration in New Mexico within 60 calendar days after their first day of work on site at Kirtland AFB, those Staff Design Architect personnel shall provide licensure status (to include anticipated licensure date) in writing to the CO/ACO no later than 60 calendar days after their first day of work on site at Kirtland AFB.
