Tetra Tech Inc. is currently seeking Wildlife Biologist for our Honolulu, HI office.

Tetra Tech is seeking a wildlife biologist with experience assessing fruit bat (Pteropus spp.), bird, and vegetation ecology in the Pacific Islands. Work will involve conducting field surveys on remote, often uninhabited islands and supporting population and related ecological assessments under local direction of a Principal Investigator (PI). Travel and night work for up to one month at a time may be required. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Conduct surveys of Mariana fruit bats, birds, other terrestrial wildlife and vegetation during work over long hours in remote locations under inclement weather conditions.

  • Conduct surveys and collect of field data for fruit bats, other wildlife, and vegetation.

  • Use topographic, vegetation, and aerial maps, GPS unit, compass, and other tools to navigate to survey locations, and to determine locations of project areas, habitat cover types, and associated landforms.

  • Conduct biological data/literature searches and reviews.

  • Assist with drafting of reports describing survey results and conclusions.

    Job Requirements:

    The ideal candidate will have the following:

  • 5 years experience with wildlife and vegetation surveys and populations assessments on Pacific Islands is required, including experience with fruit bats (Pteropus spp.) and birds.

  • Knowledge of Pacific Island natural resources.

  • Experience with literature review, field studies, data analysis, and authoring technical and scientific reports.

  • Experience with federal, state/county and private sector projects, and in preparation of work plans and technical reports, with ability to work independently on projects.

  • Ability to work productively in teams under stressful conditions.

  • Enthusiasm, resourcefulness, and a positive attitude is a plus.

  • Able to follow detailed population research study plans and safety plans, recognize bats, birds, and related island wildlife at the species level, and accurately record and analyze field observations.

  • Strong verbal and written communication and analytical skills required.

  • Self-motivated and able to take directions and work independently yet collaborate and communicate effectively as an integral member of a project team.

  • Demonstrated field experience with fruit bat (Pteropus spp.) species, other wildlife, and vegetation in the Pacific region and with appropriate survey techniques and equipment is a must.

  • Demonstrated physical ability to work on hot, humid, remote, rugged islands in the tropical Pacific for an extended period.

    Physical demands will include air travel on flights in excess of 8 hours, travel by sea for periods of roughly 12 hours, camping overnight in tents at remote field locations for an extended period, hiking in steep terrain with up to 30 lbs for up to 10 miles per day in rugged terrain, and ability to persevere in periods of inclement weather. Ability to swim is a plus.

    Work environments will include aircraft, helicopters, ocean-going vessels, and steep volcanic terrain in a hot, humid climates.

    This position in part-time, as-needed basis.
