Job Description:

Join a growing Patient Advocacy team as the VP of Global Patient Advocacy and help bring the promise of gene therapy to communities affected by severe genetic diseases and cancers. We strive for patients, their families and the organizations who serve them to be at the heart of everything we do. This bird will serve the critical role of ensuring the patient perspective is well integrated into bluebird bio s novel gene therapy approaches through research, development, medical affairs, commercial and manufacturing phases and will act as the bridge between bluebird bio, advocacy organizations, advocates and other critical stakeholders representing the patient and caregiver communities.

As the VP of Global Patient Advocacy, you will be designing and implementing the global patient advocacy strategy and advising on cross-functional medical and programmatic strategies championing engagement with the patient community. The VP of Global Patient Advocacy will partner closely with the clinical development, discovery, medical affairs, commercial, regulatory, government affairs, access and value strategy, and corporate communications functions to ensure patient community insights are well integrated into bluebird bio s programs, decision-making, communications, and strategy. This person will report to the SVP, Corporate Communications.

About the Role:

Champion the patient/caregiver and advocate voice and experience internally in support of bluebird s patients first approach and culture
Represent bluebird bio in external settings by serving as the primary interface with patient and advocate communities
Build a comprehensive and creative strategy for the patient advocacy function representing how bluebird bio shows up for, listens to, collaborates with and incorporates patient communities around the world
Be ready to think outside the box to find unique and new strategies to best ensure transparency, authenticity and care in all engagements with patient communities.
Inform corporate strategies and key decisions across the company by infusing patient insights into functional discussions and working collaboratively with your fellow birds
Lead, develop and expand the patient advocacy team aligned with the company s mission and growth
Engage regularly with professional societies and advocacy organizations to identify opportunities for collaboration in areas including clinical trial awareness, disease state education, unmet needs, diagnosis, standard of care, and access to treatment, etc.
Inform the company on patient advocacy trends, news, and disease-specific developments
Develop and manage annual budget and forecasting for patient advocacy and engagement activities
Ensure compliance with all internal and external guidelines and best practices
Requires approximately 30% travel; travel to include meetings with advocacy organizations, policy making groups and professional societies

About You:

BS/MS or Advanced degree in a Life Science and a minimum of 10 years in the pharmaceutical/ biotech industry with the majority of this being in patient advocacy and engagement, much of this in a leadership position
Experienced, energetic, inspiring and highly motivated leader who will actively engage with patients, families, and care partners battling devastating, genetically defined diseases, and the local, national and global advocacy organizations who represent them. Rare disease and/or Oncology experience strongly preferred.
Collaborative, creative, disruptive and passionate leader to bring bluebird bio s patients first value across the company.
Experience leading, developing and growing a high performing team
Strong sense of empathy and high emotional intelligence
Successful track record developing and executing strategic and tactical plans
Understanding of compliance governing patient engagement and interactions
Creative thinker to design strategy to transform and strengthen patient advocacy within bluebird bio
