Under the general supervision of the Associate Director, will supervise and coordinate the work assignments and duties of Custodial and student personnel on the graveyard shift for the University Centers, which includes the 56,000 square foot Student Center and 164,000 square foot Price Center student union facilities.

Guide crew members in proper cleaning and maintenance techniques and use of equipment and supplies. Distribute materials and equipment to be used for work assignments. Conduct regular building inspections of assigned crews to ensure quality and completion of work. Work closely with the Sr. Facility Services Manager on assigned special cleaning projects or to resolve service problems and initiate maintenance work orders as needed.

Instructs direct reports to complete assignments using established guidelines, procedures and policies. Requires full knowledge of own area of functional responsibility. May perform custodial duties part of the time.

Will support the building operations by locking/unlocking as needed and performing building checks to ensure the safety and well-being of patrons and staff.

Will support event operations team by performing room inspections to ensure event setups are correct and the rooms are clean and presentable. May meet with event clients to provide on-site support as needed.

Work Schedule/Shift:


40 hours per week, Mon-Fri 10:00 p.m. - 6:30 a.m. (Graveyard Shift).

Work schedule will vary during campus breaks and summer.



Demonstrated experience scheduling, training, and supervising custodial work. Ability to guide, train and instruct employees. Progressive professional custodial supervisory experience. Experience supervising in a large academic, hospital or commercial setting. Experience supervising in a union environment.

Working knowledge in custodial and housekeeping services. Includes extensive knowledge of the proper use and storage of cleaning chemicals, floor finishes, wall coverings and finishes, and carpet cleaning systems & equipment.

Familiar with a wide variety of custodial equipment, including high pressure washers, high speed burnishers, carpet extractors and steam machines. Ability to evaluate custodial equipment and tools to ensure proper function and ability to perform minor preventive maintenance as necessary.

Demonstrated experience supervising staff, including but not limited to training and assigning work, evaluating employee performance, recommending new hires, promotions, reclassification, and disciplinary actions.

Verbal and written communication skills in the English language, active listening, flexibility, critical thinking, multi-tasking, and time management.

Comprehensive experience cleaning and maintaining a large multipurpose facility; experience ordering supplies, maintaining custodial inventory, issuing radios and building keys, and securing facilities.

Basic computer application skills. Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel) and web browsing skills.

Working knowledge and skill in effective interpersonal and work leadership skills to provide guidance to other personnel.

Working knowledge of and ability for decision making, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, and perform operations analysis, and quality control analysis. Ability to establish priorities and solve operational problems

Thorough knowledge and ability to create and follow performance standards with regard to workloads, quality, safety and service.

Ability to understand, interpret, explain and enforce departmental and UCSD policies and procedures.



Must have CPR/First Aid certification or acquire such certification within 6 months of employment.

DMV and Background check required.

Must have and maintain a valid California driver's license.

Must work occasional flexible, variable hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.
