We are seeking a talented candidate for a senior development position.  This individual should thrive as a member of an intense, high performing team and express a desire and ability to take ownership of complex projects and drive them to completion. 

This candidate must be comfortable working on systems that provide cutting edge, mission critical clinical support.  Experience in supporting laboratory processes and/or understanding of molecular biology is not required to apply for this position; however, the successful candidate must be willing to invest the time required to come up to speed in these areas.  This position will involve interfacing closely with laboratory personnel.  While the successful candidate will spend the majority of their time developing functionality as an individual contributor, this position requires an individual who has enterprise level architectural skills.

Essential responsibilities & duties

  • Responsible for the design and implementation of complex projects, both new functionality and enhancements to existing functionality. 

  • Develops data and object models that correctly model genetic data and transactional clinical processes

  • Designs and implements functionality in a JavaEE environment

  • Maintains required documentation

  • Enables and expands interoperation between multiple application components serving the needs of multiple organizations 

  • Performs architectural design of complex software application and system components

  • Performs prototyping, design, development, installation and maintenance of highly complex, multiple modules/sub-systems.

  • Develops and approves technical documentation of product sub-systems.

  • Develops and implements unit and integration testing strategies.

  • Identifies and mitigates project risks.

  • Researches and understands the marketing requirements for a product, including target environment, performance criteria and competitive intelligence.

  • Participates in the off-hours on-call rotation 

  • All other duties the team may need as assigned

Knowledge, skills, abilities

  • Expert level technical knowledge in software development design and implementation.

  • Extensive experience in using relevant programming languages and databases.

  • Expert analytical and design skills at multi-product/multi-tier level.

  • Thorough knowledge of software design patterns.

  • In-depth experience in research and analysis, project planning and implementation.

  • Excellent understanding of development process and methodologies.

  • Ability to summarize concepts and communicate technical concepts to non-technical groups.

  • Strong communications and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability and willingness to rapidly produce very high-quality code

  • Ability to interact with end users, understand complex clinical processes and develop object models and code that accurately models these processes

  • Desire and willingness to develop a deep understanding of the issues surrounding genetic testing

Required Experience & Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree required:  Computer Science Major preferred

  • Minimum of 6 years in information technology, 5 years in a senior developer role

  • Exceptional Java programming skills

  • Experience implementing web-based, enterprise applications

  • In depth knowledge of the JavaEE platform and related technologies.

  • Experience developing across presentation, middle and backend application layers.

  • Comfortable with Eclipse IDE, Linux, Shell and/or Perl Scripting

Preferred Experience & Education

  • Experience working in an FDA 21 CFR Part 820 regulated environment

  • Experience in an ISO 13485 setting

  • Knowledge of genetics, genomics, or biological laboratory processes

  • Knowledge of clinical processes / clinical systems

  • Specific knowledge and experience with specific technologies:

    • JPA/Hibernate, EJB3

    • Flex Development

    • Oracle, SQL

    • JBoss, JMX, JQuery, Velocity templating, Tiles, Tomcat

    • XML, XSL, XSD


    • JAX-WS, SOAP

    • JUnit, Cobertura

    • Byte Code Engineering

  • Experience working with distributed applications that exchange data.

Physical requirements

Work in an office setting with minimal exposure to health or safety hazards; considerable time is spent working on a computer.
