At a Glance

Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Product Safety & Compliance Engineer to join the Middle Atlantic AV Team in Fairfield, NJ. Collaborates with internal cross-functional teams and external clients to develop positive and proactive approaches to product regulatory/safety compliance. Coordinates compliance activities for all MAP products, including but not limited to: evaluating applicable product regulations for MAP enclosures, furniture, power and electronic products, organizing required test data, and maintaining files to document compliance. Position is a resource both internally as well as for MAP customers with respect to material, components and finished good compliance issues.

What Will You Do?

Determine Requirements

  • Researches and monitors existing and newly created local, state, federal and international regulatory requirements including, but not limited to: ISO, IEC, NFPA, FCC, UL, CSA, OSHA, EPA, and DOT to assure all MAP products and processes are in compliance.

  • Responsible for supporting compliance requirements and ensuring timely submissions throughout the product life cycle.

  • Works with Product Development teams to assure products being sold, reviewed, or developed meet all compliance and certification requirements; proactively tries to assure that safety/compliance requirements are incorporated into product specifications and processes.

  • Ensure timely completion of all compliance activities in support of project schedules.

  • Become involved as needed in the development or negotiation of new agency requirements such as new environmental (Energy Star, lead-free, etc.) or other new legislated requirements affecting product design.

  • Consults with regulatory agencies regarding product classification and clarification of requirements.

  • Ensure ROHS Directive and GREEN initiatives are being acknowledged and appropriately implemented with regards to engineering, purchasing and new products.

  • Regulatory and compliance issues regarding new product and revised product design.

Communicate Requirements and Status

  • Provide technical data support and coordination of compliance-based documentation to other functions; maintain records and assure easy retrieval and dissemination of compliance information as needed.

  • Help assure product master files or submissions are accurate and verifiable against source documents to confirm compliance and traceability; this may require performance of physical configuration audits.

  • Communicates newly created regulations and compliance requirements to Engineering, Purchasing, Sales/Marketing, Product Management, etc.

  • Responsible for training the applicable groups in compliance and safety standards and how they apply to MAP Products.

  • Responds to inquiries regarding current and anticipated compliance requirements and issues on new and existing products.

Suppliers and Agency/Lab Submissions

  • Interface with certification suppliers, competent bodies, and test labs as needed and drive all product safety/compliance testing requirements. This also includes coordination, submission, and tracking of products needed to obtain pre-market registration/ notification in support of domestic and international product introductions.


  • As needed assists in efforts to obtain product compliance information from suppliers and maintain this information in an organized manner.

  • As needed represents MAP during on-site inspections (UL primarily) and internal audits. Coordinates any necessary corrective action.

Process and Change Control

  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures for dealing with compliance issues.

  • Provide assistance on implementation of new safety tests as directed.

  • Review product (EC's) and process changes for impact on existing product compliance status. This includes Review of User documentation (instruction sheets) for safety and compliance to standards.

  • Initiate plans and actions to maintain/update compliance on current products, as well as update, test specifications for compliance of new products.


Required Skills

  • Bachelors degree in technical discipline.

  • Minimum of 6 years experience in Regulatory Compliance will be substituted for the degree requirement.

  • Minimum of 2 years experience in Regulatory Compliance.

  • Minimum of 2 years experience Product Safety knowledge of Domestic and International Standards/Regulations such as ISO, IEC, NFPA, FCC, UL, ETL, CSA, OSHA, EPA, DOT, CE, RoHS/WEEE and the ability to conduct research and interpret standards. UL is of primary importance.

Preferred Skills

  • Possess an ability to summarize actions and learnings into an output for updating recommended practices related to Product Safety compliance. Technical report writing skills.

  • The ability to determine cost for all Product Safety activities for budgeting purposes.

  • The ability to multi-task and to be detail-oriented, flexible and a team player, as well as desire to learn.

  • Understanding of the role of an engineering support group and the accountability to drive issues and resolve problems.

  • Excellent communications and organizational skills.

  • Basic problem solving skills

  • Basic understanding of project management.

  • A basic understanding of AC/DC circuit theory and EMC knowledge is a plus.

  • Strong basic computer skills to allow for generation and maintenance of safety testing procedures and safety reports.

  • Hands-on ability to perform some Product Safety testing using HiPot, ground continuity, leakage current, ESD, EMC and other test equipment is a plus.
