Under the administrative direction of the Clinical Laboratory Histology Supervisor and under technical supervision and clinical consultation of the Clinical Laboratory Medical Director or assigned Pathologist(s) provides operational control and performs histological procedures on body tissue, body fluids, bone marrow and blood. The Lead Clinical Laboratory Histology Technologist is responsible for the technical processes, instrument operation, quality control, and slide quality per established policies and procedures. The Lead Clinical Laboratory Histology Technologist is accountable for the timely preparation and submission of slides to the Pathologist(s) on duty. Ensures hospital staff and physicians are treated in a courteous and professional manner. Some support tasks will be required at times to maintain the Histology Section of laboratory operations and may include specimen collection, sample handling, information system procedures, customer support, and common clerical duties.
Scheduling of hours may be changed, as company deems necessary. Cover \'on-call\' hours as requested.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
The Clinical Laboratory is a 24-hour/7-days a week operation, providing laboratory services to an inpatient and outpatient population of all ages.
The major challenge in this position is to ensure quality and timely slide preparation through appropriate organization of workload, assignment of workload, completion of quality control procedures, proper specimen identification, and ensuring proper instrument/equipment operational status. Any operational delays or quality failures must be communicated to the Pathologist(s) on duty. The incumbent must ensure that all accreditation and licensure standards are achieved. The extent of responsibility in the Histology Section of the clinical laboratory includes the frozen rooms in surgical areas, grossing room activities, tissue processing/embedding/cutting areas, hospital morgue, the viewing room, and histology specimen/record storage sites.

The incumbent must maintain the technical knowledge and skills necessary to meet the operational needs of the Histology Section and promote staff development and training. The incumbent will be responsible for staff scheduling and will assist with annual performance reviews of the Histology Section staff. Approximately 80% of working time will be spent on the bench performing as a clinical laboratory histology technologist.

The incumbent must consider the age of the patient when grossing and processing specimens, setting up the viewing room, setting up an autopsy, or releasing a body to the coroner's office or a mortuary. Must be able to communicate with a diverse patient population and their family when performing special procedures. Positive customer service behavior is expected at all times.

Must be knowledgeable of and observe all safety requirements in the laboratory and hospital. A comprehensive knowledge must be maintained in all procedures for which performance is required. Competency in work related skills must be demonstrated annually.

Accessions specimens in the appropriate Laboratory Information System(s) and accesses the Hospital Information System to collect clinical and demographic information as required by policies and procedures. Maintains corporate compliance by observing and enforcing the related policies and procedures with emphasis on confidentiality.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Requires the ability to read, write and speak the English language. Appropriate education to obtain and maintain Nevada Clinical Laboratory Histotechnologist, Cytotechnologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist licensure.

Experience: One-year experience in the histology department of a clinical laboratory is required.

License(s)/Certification(s): Requires current licensure as a Nevada Clinical Laboratory Histotechnologist, Cytotechnologist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist. Requires ability to obtain a Nevada General Supervisor's license within 6 months of hire. Requires national certification as HT (ASCP), CT (ASCP) or equivalent or ability to obtain national certification within one year.
