Job Description:

The Research Campus Systems Manager provides unique solutions to unique problems in research and administration. This person sustains a high level of customer service while providing solutions and services to scientists and staff by utilizing IT best practices. 

The successful candidate will possess the technical expertise to administer servers/services/infrastructure, consult with researchers regarding their needs, and provide user-facing support to resolve their technical issues.




Some primary responsibilities will include, Linux and Unix system administration and configuration, developing, testing, deploying and troubleshooting physical & virtual servers, responsible for the maintenance and administration of network services, such as DNS, DHCP, in a manner consistent with established and industry best practices, perform monitoring of systems and services, compile and validate data from logging tools in a timely manner, provide documentation on new and existing systems that provide consistency for operational support, manage and maintain the server room which includes, but is not limited to, space planning and utilization, cable management, networking equipment, server equipment, storage equipment, power utilization, HVAC systems, UPS systems, fire protection systems, generators, and monitoring systems, also help plan and coordinate the required maintenance and testing of all infrastructure systems to provide a stable, reliable, and highly available environment, assist in monitoring of the performance of the server room environment by escalating critical and out of normal issues to the appropriate IT personnel, Facilities Management staff, or 3rd party support vendors to ensure business continuity of all data center services, assist in the physical installation, support, and removal of equipment, may include racking servers, cabling servers, establishing network connectivity and power, develop solutions (software, hardware, etc.) to streamline data and business processes for research and administration, work with users to analyze their technology needs and offer innovative solutions, interact with internal and external software and hardware providers in the deployment and troubleshooting of system errors, manage and coordinate technical projects, perform hands-on troubleshooting and technical support for desktops and peripherals, oversee and set up access, permissions, and resource management, provide training or training resources to end-users for campus technology, escalate issues and concerns as appropriate to IT Leadership, maintain a thorough knowledge of current technology trends and advancements through self-learning, conferences and in-class training, develop and implement action plans to respond to the needs and to deliver desired outcomes, participate in the development of technology-related proposals consisting of objectives, scope, expectations, and cost estimates, manage and coordinate technical projects  and technology related events, collaborate with other specialists across campus for appropriate solutions, research and maintain an awareness of customer business drivers and appropriate technology resources and solutions, promote two-way communication between the customer and IT and within IT teams, exhibit behaviors that foster a culture of innovation, manage customer expectations on each issue and project, provide an appropriate level of business analysis and determine solutions that support, enhance and improve the business, engage IT resources in Services, Projects, Infrastructure, Applications, and the Business Office as necessary to meet customer needs, proactively monitor customer satisfaction,  and exhibit a positive demeanor and represent OU IT with professionalism.


Required Education: Bachelor Degree or equivalent combination of education/job related experience, AND:


  • 18-36 months experience with a physical layer network; Linux, MS, or Mac OS, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, etc.


Skills:




  • Linux server installation, configuration and administration (Red Hat Enterprise, CentOS).


  • Administering servers, networks, and backup systems.


  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Virtualization and Virtual Machine management using PCS.


  • Host based Firewall configuration, DNS/DHCP configuration, TCP/IP Network Design.


  • Provide high quality, detailed consultation, technical support, and troubleshooting with an emphasis on customer satisfaction and best practices from an IT perspective.


  • Strong oral and written communication skills.


  • Must possess knowledge of current personal computer hardware, operating system, client/server, and network technologies, including printers and peripheral devices.


  • Ability to install and configure a wide variety of software applications.

  • Must have excellent customer service skills and be able to talk to the technical and the non-technical people.
