Job Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:



Working under the direction of the Principal Investigator or designee, the Research Technician II will support research initiatives in the Translational Research group in the Anderson Laboratory at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine. Primary responsibilities are to perform experiments for research projects with guidance from the PI and postdoctoral fellows of the laboratory. The work will primarily be done in pre-clinical (in vitro and in vivo) models, with the possibility of extending to clinical samples.



PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:



Please note, the functions below are representative of major duties that are typically associated with these positions. Specific responsibilities may vary based upon departmental needs. Similarly, not all duties that have been outlined will be assigned to each position.




  • Prepares basic solutions and performs base-level procedures as assigned (i.e. - pipetting, cell and tissue culture, etc.)



  • Sets up and prepares routine experiments as directed.

• Assist PI with experimental design, optimizing methodology, and data analysis; may begin interpretation of results.


• Assist PI and staff with large and small animal procedures and provide post-procedure monitoring and care in accordance with IACUC-approved protocols.


• Process and manage human tissue samples, in accordance with IRB-approved protocols.


• Conduct immunohistochemical analysis of tissue samples, including collection, processing, and staining of tissue samples, as well as imaging by standard and confocal microscopy


• Perform molecular techniques i.e. RNA isolation, PCR, gel electrophoresis, immunoassays.


• Prepare, submit, revise, and manage IACUC/IRB protocols.


  • Provide general technical support of laboratory research, including preparation of media and chemical reagents, chemicals and sterilization of supplies.

• Maintain laboratory records (equipment logs, inventory, cell bank, etc.) and maintain a laboratory notebook.


• Ensure compliance with safety standards in all experimental work.


• Perform basic design and/or modification of existing protocols.


• Perform general lab maintenance to include maintenance of equipment, organization of general lab supplies, orders, etc.


• Prepare and present reports, update SOPs.


• Organize and/or draft material for the preparation of research papers, manuscripts, or other documents for publication and/or presentation.


• May perform independent literature searches.


• May provide support and functional guidance to other laboratory staff.


• Perform other core lab work as needed.






    SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

    • Understands and applies basic scientific techniques

    • Able to properly utilize and troubleshoot laboratory equipment

    • Able to organize, interpret and synthesize data, making appropriate conclusions and recommendations

    • Good problem solving and communication skills, including clear and effective documentation

    • Computer literacy. Proficiency in MS Office. Familiarity with statistical software (e.g. GraphPad), and common scientific software tools (e.g. BLAST, ImageJ) is desirable.

    • Working knowledge of research protocols

    • Ability to perform multiple tasks independently

    • Analytical skills and ability to resolve technical problems

    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team


    WORKING CONDITIONS:



    Normal conditions within a research laboratory including potential hazards and exposures such as chemicals, fumes and sharp instruments. Physical requirements may include prolonged periods of sitting, standing and walking with the ability to push, carry and pull carts, equipment and supplies. Work hours may occur outside of standard working hours.



    Qualifications

    EDUCATION:



    • Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field required.


    EXPERIENCE:

    • Minimum of 1 year of directly related experience required.

    • Experience with experimental procedures in animal models preferred.
