UTHealth Houston Ophthalmology is hiring for an Ophthalmic Assistant to join their team of professionals. The OA will be responsible for ophthalmic workups, patient history, answering patient messages, and more. Current Ophthalmic Assistant Certification (COA, COT, or COMT) is preferred. If you are not certified (COA, COT, or COMT), you must be certification eligible and must obtain certification (COA, COT, or COMT) within one (1) year of employment.

Position Summary:

The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant assists physicians providing patient care by preparing patients for examination and diagnostic testing.

Position Key Accountabilities:

1. Responsible for preparing exam rooms for patients. Maintains instruments and equipment.
2. Prepares patients for physician's exam. Performs testing based on patient needs and physician preference.
3. Assists in organizing and planning of patient care and follow-up, including major/minor procedures and diagnostic testing. Assists Ophthalmologist with surgical procedures as necessary.
4. Maintains operating room according to sterile technique, scrubbing, gowning and gloving procedures.
5. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Current Ophthalmic Assistant Certification (COA, COT, or COMT) OR
Must be certification eligible and must obtain certification (COA, COT, or COMT) within one (1) year of employment.
CPR Certification is required

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent

Minimum Experience:

One (1) year of clinical experience in Ophthalmology. Completion of an accredited program in Ophthalmology may substitute for the experience requirement. May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.

Security Sensitive:

This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
