Job Description:

ABOUT THE POSITION

Under direction, provides spiritual guidance and counseling to patients at the Riverside University Health Systems-Medical Center (RUHS-MC), plans and coordinates with religious organizations to provide multi-denominational religious and emergency services; and performs other related duties as assigned.

Employees assigned to this classification may be assigned to temporarily fill positions in any regular County of Riverside classification, performing equivalent duties and possessing equivalent responsibilities to the corresponding regular classification. County Temporaries are assigned to departments in temporary positions approved in their budgets, and may be ended at any time.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Provide spiritual support and guidance to patients, families and RUHS employees of all faiths

    • Visit patients

    • Prayers and assistance with beginning of life and end of life decisions

    • Provide blessings and dedications

    • Denominational perspectives on medical decision making

    • Trauma and crisis visits

    • Sacraments (Communion, Anointing, Last Rites


  • Provide spiritual assessments for patients
  • Respond to Code Blues
  • Work with Clergy or leadership from a particular religious tradition


  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
    REQUIREMENTS:
    Experience: Three years or more of minister experience with a recognized church or other religious organization. (Education from a recognized seminary of theology may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience based on 30 semester or 45 quarter units equaling one year of experience).

    Education: Graduation with a bachelor's degree from an accredited seminary, college or university including 12 semester or 18 quarter units in theology, counseling, psychology, sociology or related behavioral science. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for up to two years of the required education on a year-for-year basis.

    Certification/Registration: Currently ordained or accredited and in good standing with own religious denomination.

    Board Certified Chaplain is preferred, but not required

    Knowledge of: Individual and family counseling techniques; the factors involved in the development of behavior problems, including mental disorders and the principles of mental hygiene; the purposes of correctional institutions and their methods of rehabilitation; public and private community resources and referral agencies.

    Ability to: Establish rapport with medical patients or sentenced and un-sentenced persons and their families in working toward a solution to their problems; analyze situations and adopt effective courses of action; work cooperatively with various community and religious organizations; plan and coordinate various programs for several correctional facilities; effectively organize sacred and secular activities within correctional treatment program goals.

    SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

    Condition of Employment

    In accordance with the California Department of Public Health Order dated August 5, 2021, and amended December 22, 2021, health care facility workers who work in indoor settings where care is provided to patients or where patients have access for any purpose must be vaccinated against COVID-19 as follows: first dose of a one-dose regimen or second dose of a two-dose regimen, by September 30, 2021. Effective March 1, 2022, all healthcare facility workers must have their booster, obtain the booster within 15 days of becoming eligible for one, or a declination form on file for the booster. Consideration may be given to candidates who are in the process of completing their vaccination regimen.

    The Order allows for workers to be exempt from the vaccination requirements by providing the facility with a declination form signed by the individual stating either of the following: (1) the worker is declining vaccination based on Religious Beliefs; or (2) the worker is excused from receiving any COVID-19 vaccine due to Qualifying Medical Reasons. Workers who are exempted from the vaccination requirements must observe all other infection control requirements, including face coverings and regular COVID testing at the frequency required by their work site.

    A requirement of employment is to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination, or a completed COVID-19 Vaccination Declination form (filled out by the candidate and their medical provider as appropriate), during the pre-employment process. Failure to submit the required documentation may render a candidate ineligible to move forward in the process.
