ABOUT THE POSITION

The County of Riverside Probation Department seeks to fill multiple Deputy Probation Officer I vacancies throughout Riverside County. Under general supervision, performs pre-sentence investigations and makes recommendations to the court regarding cases of juvenile and adult offenders; supervises adult and juvenile probationers and assists them in meeting the conditions and goals of probation; and performs other related duties as required.

The Deputy Probation Officer I is the entry level classification in the Deputy Probation Officer series and reports to a supervisory level classification. Under close supervision, positions in this class learn to perform office and field probation work such as conducting investigations, writing court reports, representing the department in court, and supervising probationers.

Deputy Probation Officers are defined as peace officers under Section 830.5 of the California Penal Code and are subject to selection and training standards as defined by the California Government Code and the California Board of Corrections. These classes differ from the next higher class of Senior Probation Officer in that the latter performs the more complex or difficult assignments and may supervise other staff.

Advancement to the Deputy Probation Officer II level is contingent upon: meeting the minimum qualifications for that class, satisfactory work performance, successfully completing Deputy Probation Officer CORE training, PC 832, First Aide, and CPR.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Pre-sentence Investigations and Juvenile Intake: Perform investigations of individuals and their offenses and evaluate pertinent behavioral, social, and personal information.

• Prepare court reports and provide recommendations on the disposition of cases; represent the department in court and testifies regarding cases.

• Investigate juvenile referrals for possible filing of Juvenile Court petitions.

• Recommend if juveniles should be kept in custody or released, if the case should be dismissed, if a petition should be filed, or if other action should be taken.

• Supervision of Probationers: Supervise and assist adult and juvenile probationers in the implementation of their conditions of probation.

• Regularly maintain contact and communications with probationers through home visits, office visits, correspondence, and telephone.

• Prepare reports to the court regarding the probationer's progress and adjustment; prepare and maintain case history records, case evaluations, and reports to the court regarding probationers.

• Provide aid and counsel to probationers in the resolution of adjustment and rehabilitation problems; formulate plans of rehabilitation; assist the individual in more effective use and budgeting of monies.

• May arrange for and participate in group counseling sessions for probationers and their families, and for groups of probationers.

• Promote and support crime and delinquency prevention programs through contacts and involvement in community activities.

• Deputies assigned to carry a firearm supervise high-risk violent probationers, gang members, and other special caseloads which may involve performing arrests, conducting searches, and participating in inter-agency law enforcement operations.

• Attend staff, divisional, and departmental meetings; maintain records of daily and monthly activities.

• Attend courses in powers of arrest and search and seizure; may restrain an adult or juvenile for the purpose of arrest and/or detention.

• May participate in training other staff; work flexible hours, as required by assignment.

• Due to business and operational needs, staff will be assigned to a variety of schedules, facilities, offices, and assignments.

• Will occasionally work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.

• Perform other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree, preferably with a major in one of the behavioral sciences.

Experience: No experience required.

Knowledge of:The principles of adult and juvenile probation work; laws and codes pertinent to adult and juvenile probation work; interviewing techniques; functions and procedures of the criminal, juvenile, and civil courts; community resources.

Ability to: Analyze information obtained through investigation; write clear and concise reports; establish effective relationships with others: read and comprehend pertinent laws, rules, and regulations, and procedures.

Other Requirements:

Assessment:Minimally qualified candidates will be required to pass a computerized assessment in order to be considered for this position.

Age: Candidates must attain the age of 21 years prior to the completion of the background process. Applicants aged 20½ years may apply for the position, test and proceed to the background process.

License: Possession of a valid California Driver's License is be required.

Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship within three years after submitting a resume for employment.

Criminal Record: No felony convictions; cannot be on probation.

Prior to employment, candidates will be required to pass a thorough background investigation, a physical examination, and a psychological evaluation. The physical evaluation will include but is not limited to: Vision: Applicants who wear glasses or contact lenses must have uncorrected vision of no worse than 20/200 correctable to 20/20. Applicants must have normal peripheral fields and color vision. Hearing: Applicants must not have hearing loss greater than 30dB at any of the first three frequencies and an average loss no greater than 30dB for all four frequencies. Hearing aides are not permitted to meet these requirements.

SAFETY RETIREMENT: County of Riverside has three retirement Tiers through the California Public Employee's Retirement System (CalPERS).


  • Tier I (Classic Member - Formula 3% @ 50): Applicable to current and former County of Riverside local safety employees hired prior to 08/24/2012 and did not withdraw CalPERS contributions. The employee contribution is nine (9%) percent.

  • Tier II (Classic Member - Formula 2% @ 50): Applicable to local safety employees 1) Hired on or after 08/23/2012 through 12/31/2012; 2) Previously employed with another CalPERS contracting public agency or a reciprocal retirement system, with a break in service of less than six months between the separation date with the previous employer and the appointment date with the County of Riverside. The employee contribution is nine (9%) percent.

  • Tier III (PEPRA New Member - Formula 2.7% @ 57): Applicable to CalPERS local safety new members hired on or after the implementation of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) which took effect January 1, 2013. Effective July 1, 2023,the employee contributions will increase from 12.5% to 13.5%.

A new member is defined in PEPRA as any of the following:
  • A new hire who enters CalPERS membership for the first time on or after January 1, 2013, and who has no prior membership in any California Public Retirement System.
  • A new hire who enters CalPERS membership for the first time on or after January 1, 2013, and who was a member with another California Public Retirement System prior to that date, but who is not subject to reciprocity upon rejoining CalPERS.
  • A member who first established CalPERS membership prior to January 1, 2013, and who is rehired by a different CalPERS agency after a break in service of greater than six months.

  • CalPERS refers to all members that do not fit within the definition of a new member as "classic members".

    Contribution rates are subject to change based on the annual County of Riverside actuarial valuation.

    DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Voluntary employee contribution with a choice between two 457 deferred compensation plan options (Nationwide or VALIC). Employees may contribute bi-weekly deduction up to the annual maximum on a pre-tax basis as governed under IRS regulations.

    VACATION ACCRUAL (Bi-Weekly Accrual):

    0< 3 years = 80 Hours (10 Days)
    4< 9 years = 120 Hours (15 Days)
    10 or more years = 160 Hours (20 Days)

    Maximum Vacation leave accumulation is 640 hours.

    SICK LEAVE: Four (4) hours Sick Leave accrual per pay period with unlimited accrual.

    HOLIDAYS: Normally 12 paid holidays per year

    BEREAVEMENT LEAVE: 5 days (3 Days County paid and may use 2 days from accrued Sick Leave)

    DISABILITY: Short-term Disability benefit pays up to a maximum of $249.70 weekly, payable up to a maximum of 52 weeks.

    POST RETIREMENT MEDICAL CONTRIBUTION: A monthly contribution is made by the County towards retiree health insurance offered through the County as governed by the applicable RSA Memorandum of Understanding.
