The Job Details are as follows:

OCLC is seeking a Principal Architect Manager to spearhead our team and take charge of a global architecture portfolio of approximately 50 software products. The successful candidate will possess at least a decade's experience in software architecture, with specific emphasis on application modernization and cloud adoption strategies. They will have a demonstrable track record of designing and implementing resilient, scalable software solutions and managing highly skilled, cross-functional teams. Expertise in contemporary and emerging technologies is essential, and prior experience with globally distributed products is strongly favored.

In this role, the Principal Software Architect will oversee a team of architects, driving the entire lifecycle of our software products with a focus on enhancing their relevance through customer alignment, consistency, and quality. They should be capable of devising and realizing long-term strategic goals, as well as managing daily project activities. Exceptional leadership and communication skills are critical, as they will be interfacing with multiple teams, stakeholders, and clients across varied geographical regions.

Major responsibilities:


  • Drive a strategic, unified vision for a complex and globally distributed portfolio of software product

  • Partner with product and technology leadership to drive modernization and improvement across a variety of current and less than current systems

  • Partner with technology leadership on managing the portfolio of tools, accelerators, and limited frameworks

  • Ensures that information and trends within their area of expertise are effectively communicated to relevant business units within OCLC.

  • Represents OCLC’s position by participating on or leading relevant standards committees such as ISO, NISO, ACM, and IEEE Leads the implementation of standards within OCLC systems.

  • Prototyping systems in anticipation of new requirements.

  • Analyze and solve problems in existing systems.

  • Uses industry standard programming techniques to translate requirements and designs into code.

  • Evaluates and recommends major changes to development practices and continually seeks improvements to development procedures in such areas as

    • New languages and operating systems,

    • Relevant ISO and NISO standards within OCLC projects,

    • Improvements to system performance and design, and



  • Identifies new opportunities with 3rd party solutions and technique for OCLC applications with the ability to understand the impact and analyze the risk.

  • Participates in major architectural reviews and plans.

  • Other tasks as assigned.

Minimum qualifications:


  • 8 to 12 years experience at a high technical level of knowledge and experience.  (Equivalent experience without a Master’s degree is 10 to 14 years experience at a high technical level of knowledge and experience.) 

  • An advanced degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline is required.

  • Certifications in cloud technologies like AWS or Azure, and in frameworks like TOGAF or analogues is desirable.

  • Demonstrated a proven ability to provide corporate wide leadership in their area of expertise.

  • Ability to implement industry standard programming techniques by

  • Mastering advanced fundamental software development concepts, practices, and procedures, and

  • Having the ability to analyze and solve problems in existing systems.

Working Conditions: Normal office environment.
