Four main services comprise the CRI's operations: applications development, bioinformatics, IT infrastructure and scientific computing, and clinical research data warehousing/business intelligence. Job Summary



Clinical Research Data Warehouse (CRDW)


Incumbent will be responsible for supporting data requests for the CRDW, as well as for ETL Architecture and Development of our common data model infrastructure. Incumbent will spend 80% of his/her/their time supporting these efforts. This includes understanding and implementing data extractions, transformations, and loads, writing SQL code to incorporate new data sources into data warehouses and affiliated data marts, both local and distributed, and working with existing teams to further development according to existing standards and conventions. There is also a need for data management expertise. This includes data source acquisition and positioning, providing ongoing feedback and support to expand available data sources while improving the team's understanding of existing data sources, transforming and loading data into data models and platforms, both standardized and unstandardized, and creating and maintaining a growing body of documentation. Incumbent may perform data analysis to answer research questions under the direction of several University faculty members and also support quality improvement initiatives and external reporting. Finally, this position involves translating technical specifications into SQL code, generating data deliverables, and conducting code review. An ideal candidate will be able to quickly master medical terminology related to filling data requests, communicate effectively with a business analyst and clients, write SQL queries which optimize the organization of data deliverables, perform analyses using R and Python, and generate visualizations using Tableau. Prior to delivery of data, the incumbent will assist with data quality checks, making sure that each deliverable matches the original request specifications and that the data is of the highest quality.


Software Development


Incumbent will spend 20% of their time working cross-functionally with the Software Development team optimizing and modernizing custom programs, integrating and migrating data, reporting from various information systems, creating new database schemas, evaluating and implementing open-source software, and giving demonstrations of current projects. Incumbent will be responsible for our installation of REDCap, working closely with the REDCap analyst team, to improve and expand functionality, maintain upgrades, and facilitate 21CFR compliance. The software development team works primarily with C#, ASP.NET, .NET Core, MSSQL Server, MVC, and Web API; however, there is work that may require the use of other programming languages such as Python and Django.



Responsibilities



Clinical Research Data Warehouse (CRDW)




  • Gather and analyze healthcare and other related data to identify and interpret trends in support of data requests, business cases, and proposed projects.


  • Design, construct, test, and maintain data warehouse and related functionality including extraction and transformation of data using SSIS.


  • Design, develop, and test business intelligence outputs (including visualization) to ensure useful and insightful information using software including R, Python, Tableau, and/or Excel to support research and quality improvement initiatives.


  • Test and validate data with the purpose of understanding and making conclusions to support decision-making processes.


  • Manage a variety of information systems and data files, including large and complex files: analyzing file structure, using and creating file layouts, transforming raw data into finished products.


  • Monitor for timely and accurate completion of select datasets.


  • Participate in strategic initiatives to enhance data management and reporting to support research and quality improvement initiatives.


  • Collaborate closely with a cross-functional team of Data Scientists, Project Managers, and Sr. Developers to ensure high-quality data delivery to faculty.Proactively identify issues and opportunities to improve data systems and related policies as an aspect of data governance.




Software Development




  • Design and development - Work as part of the team on existing and new projects, fixing bugs, adding new features.


  • Cross-functional engagement - Work with other functional partners to contribute to product strategy.


  • Support - In collaboration with the CRI front line support, professional services, and other members of the team.


  • Provide technical guidance on resolving customer support issues, as needed.




Other




  • Investigates, analyzes and resolves day-to-day technical problems using standard procedures.


  • Works with stakeholders to gather and analyze requirements for developmental programs. Receives a moderate level of guidance to design applications to meet University and business requirements.


  • Performs code testing on components and works to ensure that appropriate implementation standards are met. Evaluates design alternatives for development cost and solutions using various methods.


  • Supports and maintains existing applications. Works with web developers and responds to requests from users.


  • Performs other related work as needed.

Experience:



  • Understanding of various common data models (OMOP, PCORnet).


  • Experience with ETL tools.


  • Experience working with application development and/or agile.


  • Experience working within regulatory and security requirements for use of electronic personal health information (HIPAA).


  • Experience with SAML-based authentication.


  • Experience creating custom software.


  • Experience with C#, ASP.NET, MSSQL Server, and .NET MVC.


  • Experience with Web technologies (REST, HTML, CSS, Javascript, AJAX) and frameworks (React, Angular, Bootstrap, Blazor) and ORM (EF, NHibernate).


  • Experience in backend database (relational, NoSQL) development and optimization.


  • Experience with HTTP servers (IIS, Apache).


  • Experience with a distributed version control system (Subversion, Git).


  • Knowledge of modern JavaScript tools such as Webpack, Babel, ESLint, Gulp, NPM, Bower, Browserify, Grunt and similar technologies.


  • Experience with unit and integration testing tools.


  • Experience in other analytic platforms including R, Stata, Python, SAS.


  • Experience with business intelligence and visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, etc.


  • Expert in SQL and Excel.


  • Knowledge of healthcare data including ICD-9, ICD-10, and CPT.
