Job Summary


The Building Innovation Scientist, Emerging Technologies will have experience in civil/construction engineering with a focus on using novel materials in Building Envelope Solutions. The ideal candidate should be intellectually curious and have a track record of creativity. They should be able to Research and Develop new product applications in the construction weatherproofing market. The role includes but is not limited to innovating new products and processes, supporting existing products and processes, optimizing operational costs and installation costs, as well as the design and performance requirements of products used in building envelope systems. This position will research latest technologies using laboratory, pilot-scale, and plant-scale processing equipment and end use evaluation tools such as ethnography to create new products and building assemblies, test methods, formulations, and processing techniques. Effective communication of this knowledge will be demonstrated by teaching others, sharing knowledge, and collaborating with stakeholders within and outside our organization. This position will operate under the general guidance of Team Leader, Manager or Director Innovation.


Duties and Responsibilities:


* General understanding of weatherproofing systems in building construction industry.
* Conceive, develop, validate, and share ideas leading to new or improved products, processes, materials, systems, or scientific knowledge in the space of Building Envelope Solutions. A passion and willingness to innovate and improve products and technologies through applied sciences is highly desired.
* Work with other scientists and enable development of next generation materials, composites, coatings and membranes to advance the Building Envelope Solutions technology platform.
* Partner with Intellectual Property and Strategic Marketing to develop our technology roadmap.
* Foster relationships with external partners, both academic and business, to quickly build new capabilities.
* This role allows for high creativity and hands on work as desired.


* Project management skills utilizing the Stage-Gate process.
* New Product / Process Development.
* Research and Develop technologies to create value proposition for new products.
* Organize work in alignment with business priorities.
* Collaborate with raw material suppliers to innovate with new raw materials.
* Read and Research latest technologies to identify future new products and processes in the Building Envelope Solutions market.
* Collaborate and share knowledge with others.


Principal Accountabilities


* Support the Innovation process by maintaining the technical expert role and state of the art technology competencies within the area of focus in Front End Innovation projects.
* Develop and maintain the role of technical expert in area of focus for all facets of existing products.
* Drive product technology advancements and innovations by investigating, creating, and bringing in new materials, processes, designs, and procedures into the organization.
* Manage and lead the Ideation and Building the Business Case efforts of Front-End Innovation and Phase-Gate projects.
* Communicate project status, study results, innovative efforts, etc., regularly and effectively (meetings, reports and presentations).
* Adapt to changing business needs and goals.


Required Skills/Abilities/Knowledge:


* Experience with building code and materials used for weatherproofing in the construction industry.
* New Product research and development in building envelope system technology.
* Knowledge of analytical techniques used in civil engineering. Standard test methods and procedures.
* Ability to collect voice of customer by interacting with construction contractors and architects.
* Safety compliance and procedures knowledge.
* Math/algebra/applied statistics. Use of relevant software. General computer literacy.
* Assembly and Fabrication.
* Product / System testing in the Field
* Knowledge of polymer materials and compounds.

Education and Experience:


* BS Degree in Architecture or Civil Engineering with experience in the chemical space.
* Alternatively, Bachelor of Science degree Chemistry or Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics, Polymer Science (or related technical discipline) with Master's/PhD degree or work experience in Civil engineering space.
* 3 to 5 years' experience in new product development in the building construction area.
* Equivalency: Completion of a bachelor's degree in Civil, Architectural, Chemical, Chemistry or Applied Physics technical field, with 5-10 years hands on experience in the construction field.
