Job Description Summary
The University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA seeks a Senior Research Investigator to oversee operations of the Clinical Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center's translational laboratory, including biospecimen processing, equipment maintenance, laboratory compliance maintenance, ordering laboratory supplies, and related duties as assigned. Bring together clinical research related to TBI across the Departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery, Emergency Medicine, Neuroradiology, and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, with the goal of developing novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to improve the clinical management of TBI. Communicate with principal investigators about planned experimental approaches and discuss results of those experiments. Maintain and adhere to best practice protocols to maintain laboratory safety and adherence to guidelines. Perform laboratory assays and data analysis relevant to the translational research mission of the Center. Train research coordinators, students, and other scientists and trainees on proper laboratory techniques and safety. Provide compliance training for all laboratory members. Maintain biorepository databases and equipment related to the biorepository. Oversee biospecimen shipments between laboratories, including globally. Carry out independent research projects collaborating with the principal investigators and other TBI Center faculty. Design and perform hypothesis-driven experiments. Lead histopathologic and immunohistochemical analyses of tissue from human brain autopsies, as well as tissues from experimental pre-clinical TBI models. Analyze research results using rigorous biostatistical tools. Prepare manuscripts for publication, incorporating critical input from co-authors. Lead preparation of responses as required by journal editors. Apply for federal and non-federal extramural research grants related to independent research projects.

Job Description

Requirements: PhD (or foreign equivalent) in Biology, Neuroscience, or a related field. Must have 2 years of experience after terminal degree including the following: Experience developing, modifying, adapting, and troubleshooting biochemical and cell-biological assays to measure biomarkers in human biofluids and tissue specimens. Experience designing, troubleshooting, and interpreting experimental approaches to address specific research questions. Experience assessing data quality and completeness, analyzing data using appropriate statistical methods (such as Student's t-test, Mann-Whitney test, Fisher's exact test, Spearman's and Pearson's correlations, logistic regression, or linear regression), and preparing graphs and tables for publication in scientific manuscripts. Experience preparing initial drafts of scientific publications, summarizing basic findings, and responding to feedback for manuscript drafts. Experience maintaining database and inventory of biological samples.
