Job Description Summary


The Division of Facilities and Real Estate Services (FRES) provides the expertise, business process, policies and standards required to plan, design, construct, operate, maintain and renew the physical assets of the University, excluding the health system. In addition, the Division, comprised of approximately five Departments, is responsible for the strategic planning, management and operation of non-academic University property, and collaborating with the neighborhood to create a safe, diverse and economically vibrant destination. With close to 12M square feet of space, FRES maintains 186 buildings on a campus of 276 acres, completes over 60,000 maintenance requests per year, and starts approximately 250 projects a year. FRES is comprised of the following Departments: Administration, Office of the University Architect, Design and Construction, Real Estate, Operations and Maintenance.


The University of Pennsylvania is implementing a campus transformation entitled Penn Connects (http://www.pennconnects.upenn.edu). This comprehensive, award winning effort is expanding the campus over the next 20 years, including the construction of new academic research and recreational facilities. Job Description






Safety Intern:




The Safety Intern will work alongside the Occupational Safety Manager and other Safety Professionals to assist in day-to-day activities and develop and review safety policies and procedures. Throughout the course of the summer, you will gain practical hands-on experience and an understanding of how safety and health programs are applied in a professional environment.



Job Responsibilities / Duties:




  • Conduct and Update Job Safety Analysis's (JSAs) for department specific tasks.




  • Develop a department specific ergonomics training program.




  • Participate in the development and review of employee training material for various safety and health topics.




  • Audit and maintain compliance with Safety Programs (i.e. LOTO, Fall Protection, Contractor Safety, Confined Space, etc.)




  • Assist in the development of safety and health communications.




  • Participate in incident investigations and assist in developing corrective actions.




  • Support safety engagement activities for National Safety Month.




  • Support monthly safety meetings.




  • Perform additional duties as assigned









Job Qualifications:





Required Qualifications:




  • Knowledge of key safety programs (i.e. - Job Safety Analysis/Risk Assessment, Ergonomics, Working at Heights, etc.)




  • Strong written and verbal communication skills




  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.




  • Positive professional attitude and willingness to learn.




  • Proficiency using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.




  • Pursuing a degree in Occupational Safety Management or related field.











  • Student Must be currently enrolled in Higher Education.






  • Not Remote Eligible; Must work on-campus at Penn FRES.






  • This internship is for a Maximum of 12 weeks in duration.






  • Interns are required to bring their own Laptop; no hardware or software will be provided.









Preferred Qualifications:




  • Have completed at least two years of college course work toward the safety related degree.








Targeted Pay Range: $15-$18/per hour



This Targeted Pay Range is only applicable to this job posting.


Pay rate will be commensurate with intern's year in higher education.
