Position Summary:



The Communications Specialist for the School of Medicine will assist in providing day-to-day communications support to inform and engage the school's faculty, staff and students. Specific duties include:

  • Develop and maintain a School of Medicine (SOM) internal communications calendar to proactively plan for annual events, observances, etc.
  • Develop and implement internal communications projects/campaigns to support SOM strategic priorities and initiatives to ensure that current and prospective School of Medicine faculty, staff, and students are engaged and informed about strategic goals, key initiatives, and priorities.
  • Work with SOM departments to identify stories and develop communications. Draft content for multiple communications channels, including web, social media, e-newsletters, Inside Hopkins, mainstream media, etc.
  • Assist in identifying and implementing new strategies to strengthen Johns Hopkins School of Medicine's presence in online and print outlets and better position JHSOM research and education experts as leaders in their fields in close collaboration with colleagues on the JHM communications team.
  • Use analytic tools to track and monitor communications programs.
  • Assist with the implementation of our digital employee communication efforts. Develop and implement communications strategies to increase SOM employees' adoption of the JHM Link platform/app. Track SOM adoption and engagement.
  • Assist in managing and creating content and updating the SOM website.
  • Represent the SOM on cross-functional teams coordinating with the JHM Marketing and Communications departments, including the web, social media, video, public relations/media, and institutional and entity internal communications teams.
  • Assist in collaboration and coordination of communications with the JHU Marketing and Communications department on combined university and health system communications.
  • Monitor and respond to requests and queries in the SOM communication email box; triage questions to appropriate subject matter experts as needed.
  • Coordinate review and approval of SOM communications with the Dean's office.


Education: Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, public relations or closely related field required. Advanced degree in related field preferred.

Required Work Experience:



A minimum of three years of experience in journalism, media relations, or public affairs, preferably in an academic or health care environment. Requires demonstrated experience working successfully on deadlines and designing and implementing communications plans and strategies. Demonstrated experience in implementing effective external and internal communications plans and strategies and editing/writing high-quality publications is required.



Department Preferred Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities:


  • The position will assist in planning, developing, and implementing internal and external communications for the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Specific knowledge, skills, and abilities required include:
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing internal and external communications plans and strategies to inform and educate internal audiences, prospective employees and students, and the general public about SOM's strategic goals, key initiatives, and priorities.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills and attention to detail; Ability to work comfortably in a fast-paced environment and effectively prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously while setting and meeting demanding deadlines.
  • Strong writing, editing, and presentation skills. Proven skills in creative storytelling and complex narrative writing and editing; ability to translate academic, medical, and technical information and tailor content to engage diverse internal audiences across multiple communications channels.
  • Ability to write stories and develop content for publications, web, social media, etc.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proven track record of collaboration. Ability to work in a team setting and independently. Ability to effectively communicate and interact with colleagues at all levels of the organization.
  • Knowledge of and experience using communications tools and platforms to reach internal and external audiences, including the Staffbase, JHM Link, SharePoint, e-newsletters, email, etc.; Experience with Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.
  • Knowledge of AP Style and ability to apply institutional style standards consistently.
  • Ability to apply analytical skills to track, measure, and report relevant metrics to gauge the effectiveness of communications.
