The Coding Specialist III, under the supervision of the Coding Supervisor, Inpatient Coding -Community Division, analyzes and interprets documentation in the patient record to accurately code and abstract data for community based Inpatient records. Utilizing a computerized encoder and multiple databases, abstracts data from clinical documentation in the electronic health record and assigns classification codes in accordance with Federal, State, and organizational guidelines, to ensure accurate and timely billing and reporting. Queries physicians as needed to clarify documentation to support accurate code assignment. Organizes and prioritizes work to meet deadlines and goals. Maintains and expands knowledge of coding and sequencing guidelines to ensure coding compliance and accuracy.

Experience/Education:
Education/Experience/Certification Track 1: High school diploma w/ CCS required. Requires (3) three years' experience coding inpatient hospital records.
Education/Experience/Certification Track 2: Associates Degree/RHIT required. Requires (2) two years' experience coding inpatient hospital records.
Education/Experience/Certification Track 3: A minimum of high school diploma or GED is required. Requires (10) ten years of coding inpatient hospital records . CCS preferred
Licensure/Certifications:
If qualifying under Track 1, a minimum of an AHIMA credential of CCS is required upon hire.
If qualifying under Track 2, a minimum of an AHIMA credential of RHIT is required upon hire.
Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to demonstrate in-depth knowledge of current coding classification systems, concepts, practices, compliance, and policies related to inpatient coding and accurately assigns codes as governed by state and federal regulations.
Completion of Community Hospital Inpatient Diagnosis and Procedure Coding assessment with a minimum of 75% accuracy.
