Position Summary:



Reports to the Laboratory Manager/Supervisor, Director, Faculty, and/or Assistant Administrator and functions as the principle technical authority in a laboratory section performing non-routine and/or specialized tests and analyses which require the regular application of problem solving, and/or investigative skills due to their unusually difficult and complex nature. Responsible for planning, implementing documenting training, in-service and continuing educational programs for employees, students, physicians, visiting faculty, and others. Participates in developing and implementing laboratory procedures and techniques and/or the investigation, planning, installation, test/validation of new equipment, laboratory tests or technologies. (Some positions may also focus on technology, clinical software/applications). Duties may vary by area assigned but the following are characteristic of this classification.



Education:



A Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology/Clinical Laboratory Science and/or equivalent education and training in microbiology, chemistry, hematology, immunohematology required.



Work Experience:



Minimum 3 years of clinical laboratory experience which must include at least 2 years of experience in the given specialty area in order to acquire the necessary familiarity with clinical laboratory policies and procedures in field of specialty.
Preferred; specialist designation/certification or graduate program or Masters degree completion in related specialty. (i.e. MS degree, SBB Program, ASCP Certified Specialist in field/Chemistry, Micro, Blood Bank).



Knowledge/Skills:


  • Work requires high level of technical knowledge and familiarity of specialized and complex laboratory testing procedures, operation and maintenance of specialized instruments, and knowledge of current laboratory methodology. The ability to interact with physicians while assisting in clinical decisions. Demonstrates leadership skills, proper investigation and evaluation techniques while following laboratory policies and procedures.
  • High level of analytical ability required to determine appropriate testing procedures and analyze test results and quality control data, evaluate published research, troubleshoot complex result problems, validate, and verify new laboratory procedures and instruments. Requires interpersonal skills to maintain effective communication with employees within area, and to conduct training of new employees, students and residents.
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems with equipment or test methods.
  • Ability to assist in the training of new employees, students and physicians in laboratory methodology. Ability to use and understand computer system reference materials and Laboratory Standard Operating Procedure Manuals.
