Clemson University invites applications and nominations for founding Dean of the proposed new College of Veterinary Medicine. We seek an innovative Dean who will provide significant leadership for planning and initiating this signature college. Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean will be expected to provide collaborative leadership and administrative oversight for the strategic and progressive development of the college's research, teaching, service, and community engagement.
A successful candidate for dean will embrace the challenges and opportunities to provide strong programs in the newest college at Clemson University, a highly ranked land-grant university. The Dean will possess the skills, leadership, and entrepreneurial vision to advance the goals in the University's strategic plan and be a strong leader with broad experiences in diverse educational contexts. JOB DESCRIPTION
The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the college. The Dean holds tenured faculty rank and provides leadership, vision, and strategic planning to help formulate and implement educational policies while serving as the collegiate faculty's agent in the execution of such policies. The Dean serves as the principal internal and external spokesperson for the college as well as for its mission of promoting all areas associated with this college. Performance in office is reviewed at regular intervals by the Provost per the Clemson University Faculty Manual. The Dean will be responsible for:
College Resources
Veterinary Medicine is one of eight colleges at Clemson University and the University. The University and the State of South Carolina have committed nearly $300M to build the college's teaching and research facilities immediately adjacent to the main campus in Clemson, SC.
The college will consist of the doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) degree, multiple graduate degrees to be determined over the next few years, and several nationally acclaimed initiatives and programs The college will be organized into academic departments, and multiple distributed clinical education sites and centers, supported by associate deans, department chairs, faculty and staff, and will serve 320 professional degree students when fully enrolled as well as graduate students.
Minimum qualifications for this position are a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a distinguished record of achievements that would merit an appointment as professor with tenure in an academic department in the college, and an excellent record of academic leadership, administrative experience, and responsibilities. A Ph.D. is preferred. The successful candidate for dean will demonstrate a strong commitment to scholarship, outstanding capacity to communicate with multiple constituencies, provide leadership for the college's broad spectrum of academic activities, and develop an engaging vision for the future of the college. The successful candidate will also have a demonstrated record of recruiting and retaining faculty; a commitment to the principles and practices of shared governance; a strong commitment to diversity; strong fiscal and personnel management skills; an ability to enhance research; demonstrated success in obtaining philanthropic support from individuals, foundations and corporations, and/or show a genuine enthusiasm to engage in such fundraising; and the skills to steward such philanthropic support.
