Assistant Director, OI Compliance

The Office of Policy Coordination (OPC) occupies a unique position in the School of Medicine (SOM). It develops and manages implementation of policy in the areas of individual financial interests and individual financial conflicts of interest, disclosure and professional commitment, misconduct, research integrity, and use of the institution's name. Members of the office work closely with faculty members, institutional leaders and staff of the University and Johns Hopkins Medicine, the Office of General Counsel, and individuals outside the institution.


We are seeking an Assistant Director, OI Compliance who will report to the Director of Outside Interests (OI) and is a key partner in ensuring the SOM's compliance with applicable federal regulations on individual financial interests and individual financial conflicts of interest in research. The OI team is responsible for the review of faculty disclosures, preparation, review, processing, and documentation of conflict-of-interest cases, and supports the work of the Committee on Outside Interests. The position will work closely with the Director of OI to implement, maintain and enhance compliance initiatives. The position has primary operational responsibility for implementation of OI compliance initiatives.



Specific Duties & Responsibilities



  • Review and process disclosures of outside activities and conflicts of interest in accordance with institutional and office policy and procedures.



  • Independently identify data needed to review potential conflicts of interest and to ensure compliance with institutional policies and federal regulations.



  • Conduct compliance activities to ensure faculty understand and follow policies.

  • Work closely with Offices of Research Administration, Technology Ventures, Human Subjects Research, and General Counsel for complex COI cases.



  • Conduct supplemental research of complex disclosures; prepare resulting case write-ups and present cases to the Committee on Outside Interests for review.



  • Develops and updates OI guidelines for identification of high-risk cases and templates for management and monitoring of high-risk cases.



  • Monitors approved disclosures and follow up to ensure compliance with case management and conditions.



  • Explains analysis of complex cases and recommended guidelines to department directors, faculty, investigators and others.

  • Prepares periodic compliance reports.

  • Initiates and compiles results of quarterly OI quality check of disclosure review.

  • Collaborates with the Director of OI in compliance implementation initiatives, including, maintenance and enhancement of current compliance processes.



  • Provide e-mail and telephone support for faculty members regarding disclosures, policy questions and other requests as needed.



  • Explain OI policies and relevant regulations to faculty and staff.

  • Other duties as assigned.






Minimum Qualifications



  • Master's Degree, Law Degree, or PhD.

  • Minimum of three years of progressively responsible related professional experience.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • High level of organizational and time management skills.

  • Strong analytical reasoning skills.

  • Ability to complete complex tasks efficiently with a minimum of supervision.

  • Ability to effectively supervise other staff members.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, and web-based research.






Preferred Qualifications



  • Previous experience in an academic research setting.

  • Knowledge of federal regulations on objectivity in research.

Starting Salary Range: $71,230-$97,880-$124,510 Annually (Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
