The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Dr. Markus Kuehn lab is seeking a 100% Research Assistant. The Research Assistant participates in a study investigating the role of the systemic immune system in degenerative ocular and CNS diseases. The position requires substantial experience in cell culture, mouse handling, molecular biology techniques, and immunohistochemistry. Key position duties include:
Perform experiments on mouse vision including induction of elevated intraocular pressure.
Perform a variety of molecular biology techniques, including DNA and RNA isolation and Q-PCR.
Perform histochemical and immunohistochemical evaluation of ocular tissue.
Maintain primary cell cultures.
Maintain daily records of procedures carried out.
Supervise student workers
Assist in maintaining inventory of chemicals and reagents
Contribute directly to maintaining a neat and orderly laboratory environment.

Position Type: Specified Term. Initial appointment is for one year. Appointment may be extended based on performance and availability of funding.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in the life sciences or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
3+ years experience working in a laboratory
Experience with handling rodents and colony maintenance
Experience with histology and immunohistochemistry
Expertise with PCR and real time PCR techniques
Experience with mammalian cell culture
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with ocular research
Background in Immunology
Experience with genotyping
Experience with ELISA assays
Experience with FACS
