Job Description:

Position will be filled as either Biomedical Equipment Technician or Biomedical Equipment Technician Trainee based on candidate qualifications and interview evaluation. To be considered for different job classification levels, candidate must apply for each position interested in.


Position Summary: Under direct supervision of an experienced healthcare technology management (HTM) professional, performs a variety of routine tasks associated with the installation, maintenance, calibration, and repair of biomedical and laboratory equipment. The equipment is varied and frequently non-related as well as being located in multiple and diverse departments of the institution. The majority of the work is performed in a repair shop setting with occasional work required in patient care or clinical settings. Bioengineering is comprised of people committed to working together to safely maintain medical equipment, collaborating to solve problems, and providing top notch customer service for the University of Iowa Health Care patients and staff.

Salary: $46,820.80


Percent of Time: 100%


Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Some overtime may be required to access equipment, cover absences, emergencies, and peak periods of operation.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Basic Understanding and skills related to general electro-mechanical systems and devices.
  • Basic understanding of common clinical terminology as well as that of life sciences such as anatomy and physiology.
  • Basic understanding of both local and national public safety and regulatory requirements that pertain to healthcare technology management
  • Basic knowledge of chemistry, physics and human physiology.
  • Ability to apply troubleshooting logic in diagnosing and repairing circuit board level malfunctions of basic electronic equipment/systems used in a medical and/or research environment.
  • Ability to use general and specialized test equipment, hand and shop tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret electronic schematics and technical documents.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with the professional medical staff both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work in a medical/research environment under adverse conditions.
  • Ability to solder sensitive and small components.
  • Ability to use independent judgment to ensure quality patient care.
  • Skill in repairing equipment without "reworks".
  • Ability to assemble, fabricate and test electronic circuits and/or modifications to electronic equipment.
  • Ability to consistently move 25 lb. test weights.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time.


MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • A.S. degree in Biomedical or Electronics technology; and
  • Successful completion of the Biomedical Equipment Technician Trainee Program; or
  • One year of experience troubleshooting, repairing, and testing electronic or electromechanical equipment.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATION:

  • Must meet the University of Iowa Fleet Services program rules and regulations, due to the ability to drive University vehicles.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous Biomedical Equipment Technician experience.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
