Job Description:

Under general supervision of the Director, Cardiology and the Medical Director of the Vascular Lab, the Lead Vascular Ultrasound Sonographer will function in the role as vascular ultrasound technologist and oversee the day to day operation of other vascular Sonographers. The Lead Vascular Ultrasound Sonographer reviews and revises exam protocols and monitors standards and processes of vascular ultrasound imaging in alignment with IAC accreditation standards; communicates with and trains imaging staff on all equipment; ensure IAC accreditation standards are adhered to within the Vascular Lab. Assists in the evaluation of patient data in conjunction with the interpreting radiologist and/or vascular surgeon. Performs procedures on a variety of patients ranging from newborn to geriatric in age.


Lead Tech Functions


  • All the functions of an Vascular Ultrasound Sonographer (below)

  • Supervise the day-to-day activities for the Vascular Ultrasound Sonographers

  • Provide input related to performance evaluations, hiring and interview process.

  • Coordinate daily activities and assignments and anticipate needs and requirements.

  • Provide positive and constructive feedback to team.

  • Clearly communicate with leadership to escalate issues.

  • Provide training and education for the technician team.

  • Ensure the Vascular Lab follows IAC criteria and protocols, and maintains IAC accreditation

Technician functions




  • Operates imaging and non-imaging equipment to produce diagnostic exams of the blood vessels of all parts of the body, including extremities, head, neck, and abdomen.



  • Performs portable vascular studies when necessary.



  • Perform imaging procedures on inpatient and outpatient adult, elderly and pediatric populations.



  • Obtains clinical history. Assists in evaluation of clinical data in conjunction with the interpreting radiologist or vascular surgeon.



  • Chooses correct technical factors.



  • Recognizes pathology and knows when to take additional images.



  • Instructs and presents training to staff for all vascular exams, ensuring consistent quality: PVRs, Carotid, RAS, Hemodialysis graft, reflux, Temporal Artery , Venous and arterial extremity exams.



  • Ensure staff competency pertaining to exam performance and equipment usage.



  • Cares for patient emotional and physical needs as appropriate in line with the NWH values.



  • Works with Centralized scheduling, inpatient floors, and physicians offices to schedule patients.



  • Schedules exams, answers phone, and does office work as needed.



  • Communicates verbal preliminary reports as appropriate and drafts preliminary reports.



  • Transports patients and helps with lifting and supporting patients as necessary.



  • Answers patients, physicians, nurses and family members questions and solves scheduling and other problems.



  • Participates in continuing education programs as dictated by JCAHO and other regulatory/accrediting agencies.



  • Participates in CQI/TQM activities.



  • Records patient exams in EPIC System and Synapse (PACS) System.



  • Performs clerical duties as necessary on computer.



  • Verifies patient identification by arm bands and outpatient requisitions by using two patient identifiers.



  • Verifies appropriateness of ordered exam by requisition, chart, attending physician and radiologist when necessary.



  • Inform management of patient issues/need for service recovery.






Qualifications

Education/Experience


  • Five years of clinical experience in dedicated vascular lab

  • Bachelor's degree Preferred



License, Certifications, Registration


  • Registered diagnostic medical sonographer

  • Registered Vascular Technologist

  • CPR Certified (BLS)



Knowledge and Skills


  • Knowledge of the special needs and behaviors of infant, child, adolescent, adult and older adult patients preferred
