Job Description:

Summary:



The Veterinary Technologist (Vet tech) will support and assists several Principal Investigators (PIs) and research/clinical fellows (Researchers) in the Gordon Center for Medical Imaging. The Vet tech will be responsible for routine animal health monitoring and serve as a primary responder to veterinary-related issues associated with advanced medical and surgical procedures. They will perform clinical veterinary rounds in accordance with CCM veterinary care guidelines. They may be responsible for scheduling specific manipulations, performing or assisting in radiotracer injections, surgical procedures, performing treatments, assisting with diagnostic tests including PET/CT/MRI scans and managing post-operative care cases and health assessment/health assurance programs for a variety of species, not limited to but including mice, rats, rabbits, pigs and non-human primates. Duties also include reconstruction, processing and archiving of scanning studies as well as writing and maintenance of IACUC protocols in coordination with PIs.


Familiarity with the regulatory requirements as outlined in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and Animal Welfare Act is a part of the position's responsibilities.



Principal Duties and Responsibilities:





  • Perform clinical rounds and ensures that prescribed clinical care is conducted for the research animals as necessary and delegated by researchers.


  • Ensuring all procedures performed in GCMI spaces adhere all applicable regulations and guidelines for animal welfare, care and use.


  • Provide anesthesia for advanced level procedures, and/or assist in surgical manipulations.


  • Oversee multi-level post-operative care program for all animals recovering from surgery ascribed by researchers.


  • Perform specific diagnostic procedures including highly technical sample collection (i.e. catheterization), radiographs, PET/CT/MRI scans, and necropsy procedures as necessary.


  • Maintain inventory management system/material replenishment system for all veterinary medications and supplies including controlled substances, personal protective equipment (PPE) and other animal use research supplies.


  • Responsible for timely and efficient correspondence with the MGH IACUC, and assist with editing research protocols as required by research and regulatory staff.


  • Ensuring Annual Reviews and Triennial Reviews of IACUC protocols are completed in a timely manner.


  • Provide training for new Researchers and students on animal procedures and IACUC protocol management.


  • Maintaining an accurate census of animals held by the Center in MGH animal housing facilities.


  • Assist with animal management (including breeding/weaning), compliance documentation, and PET Core responsibilities as needed.


  • Responsible, with grants manager, for regular review of animal study charges to ensure they will post to the correct funding source.


  • In charge of setting up animal experiments which require complex coordination and planning, including other personnel and collaborators.


  • Oversees maintenance of "Gordon PET Core PET Manager" animal research scanner schedule, ensuring all PET Core Users needs are met fairly with appropriate oversite.


  • Maintain all documentation required for the performance of the duties stated above.


  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide appropriate veterinary care for his/her assigned responsibilities.


  • Comply with CCM and MGH policies and procedures.


  • Assist with coordination of equipment servicing requests with outside vendors for shared equipment in the GCMI labs in all GCMI Lab spaces.


  • Assist as liaison with Buildings and Grounds and Environmental Services for maintenance issues as needed for all of the GCMI Labs.


  • Other duties as assigned.







Qualifications

Proficient in routine veterinary practices and diagnostic procedures.


Strong listening, verbal and written communication skills. Proficiency in mathematics pertinent to the duties of the position.


Computer experience in software such as Word, Excel, Access, Outlook and PowerPoint required.


Ability to lift and move 60 lbs on a regular basis.


Long periods of standing.


Capable of working in a team-oriented environment.


Ability to make decisions regarding veterinary clinical care and to address veterinary emergency situations that arise during the animal studies.


CVT or LAT certifications preferred.


Some college or Associate Degree preferred.


One year of veterinary care experience post degree preferred.


Experience with a variety of animal species preferred.
